It’s been a crazy week for
the Viking baseball team,
with weather woes creating a
constantly evolving spring
break schedule.
Last Wednesday’s first
home game, against Sweet
Home, was washed out and,
instead, played Thursday at
the Huskies’ den.
After a 6-2 loss, Siuslaw
was on the road Saturday for
the Taft Tournament, where it
picked up its second loss, 4-
1, to the Tigers.
The next day, they were
back at Taft, taking on Gold
Beach for an impressive 14-1
win. Though the Vikings
were scheduled to continue
on in the tournament with a
game against Valley Catholic
last Monday, again weather
canceled Monday’s game.
All told, the Vikings have
had three games cancelled
since March 14, which was
supposed to be their season
opener, at home, against
Cottage Grove.
Despite the ups and downs
of trying to keep momentum
in the face of constant sched-
ule changes, the Vikings are
settling into their own groove
as they prepare for their first
home game, March 29,
against Elmira.
The team has three return-
ing 2015 all-stars, including
second team all-leaguers
Scott Gordon and Kenneth
Thrall, and honorable men-
tion recipient Caleb Paredes.
This season, Thrall will
play shortstop and Gordon
will play second base, with
Paredes in centerfield.
Behind the plate, Kyle
Rose will be part of the bat-
tery with starting pitcher
Michael
Larson
and
Mapleton lefthanded fresh-
man Gabe Simington.
With the core group of last
year’s team returning along
with second-year coaching
staff Tony Castro, Randy
Paredes and Dave Snow, the
Viks are looking to build on
last year’s 5-10 league record
(7-18 overall) and give the
Far West League its own kind
of reign.

Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
tends to be slower during
the winter month but can
pick up quickly as spring
nears and fish move to the
shallows for spawning.
There are numerous lakes
in the Florence area that
can provide good opportu-
nity and have both boat
and bank access.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is fair for both the
Siuslaw and Lake Creek
systems. River conditions
will vary through the week
as more rain is predicted.
Casting lures, bobber fish-
ing or pulling plugs are
good options.
ALSEA RIVER:
Steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
is slow to fair. Forecasted
rain this week should move
in some new fish and
improve the bite. During

without rain,” said Humphrey. “Everybody had the same
idea and came here to have some fun.”
