Join fellow opera lovers at
City Lights Cinemas for the
Royal Opera House’s “Boris
Godunov” on Monday, March
21 at 6 p.m.
In the title role of Modest
Musorgsky’s only completed
opera, the composer created one
of the greatest bass-baritone
roles in the canon. Bryn Terfel,
renowned Welsh artist, will per-
form Godunov for the first time
in this production from
London.The role of Godunov is
a touchstone for operatic basses
and a tour de force for an artist
who can display both powerful
vocal and dramatic skills.
Adapted from a play by
Alexander Pushkin about the
extraordinary reign of the 16th
century tsar, Boris Godunov is
regarded as one of the master-
pieces of the operatic repertoire.
Musorgsky created the role
of Godunov as a vehicle
through which to explore his
ideas on realism and naturalistic
declamation.
The opera provides a mov-
ing, complex and tragic portrait
of Russia that combines the
sweep of history with intimate
personal encounters. The spirit
of the Russian people domi-
nates the story and the opera is
filled with dramatic pageantry
and magnificent choruses.
The story line follows Boris
Godunov as he’s withdrawn to a
monastery following the death
of Tsar Fyodor, who did not
leave an heir. Boris is weighted
down by anxiety, guilt and a
sense of foreboding.
The audience learns that
Godunov murdered the nine-
year-old Tsarevich Dmitry who
stood between him and the
throne.
A young monk, Grigory,
shares a cell with Pimen, who is
finishing his great work on the
history of Russia. Pimen has
witnessed the murder of the
tsarevich and shares his chroni-
cles with Grigory who decides
to name himself the risen tsare-
vich and do battle with
Godunov for the throne.
What follows in this monu-
mental work are intrigue, love
and passion set against the suf-
ferings of the Russian people,
who have been visited by acute
famine and starvation thought
to be divine punishment.
Acclaimed director Richard
Jones directs this new produc-
tion which is in Russian with
English subtitles.
