SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2016 9 A Toastmasters announce speech contest winners WLCF scholarship applica- The Siuslaw Talespinners hosted Toastmasters Inter- national Area 31 International Speech and Evaluation contests March 2, at the Siuslaw Fire and Rescue Station in Florence. Contestants were Jim Wolak, Ann Machalek, Irma Geller and Noah Schultz. In the International contest Wolak’s speech was titled: “How it Feels Inside," Machalek’s speech was “Cherish the Now,” and Schultz’s speech was “Verbal Escape Change Through Poetry.” In the evaluation portion of the contest, Wolak, Machaleck and Geller evaluated a speech by Distinguished Toastmaster Jim Perry, titled: “Why do peo- ple join Toastmasters?” First place in the International speech division went to Machalek. First place in the Evaluation contest was taken by Geller. Several of the scholarships are directed toward students in particular fields of education or with other qualifying char- acteristics such as mechanical interest, nursing, etc Last year, Western Lane Community Foundation awarded over $25,000 in scholarships. Since WLCF established its first scholar- ships more than 40 years ago, more than $250,000 has been awarded to both Mapleton and Siuslaw graduating seniors. Scholarships are available for seniors at Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools. WLCF administers 15 scholarship funds, most of which are awarded annually and range from $500 to $2,500 each. The funds represent yearly earnings from funds WLCF manages on behalf of generous donors of our local community. Applications can be obtained at local high school counseling offices or online at www.wlcfonline.org, and must be postmarked or received no later than April 15 at PO Box 1589, Florence, OR, 97439, or submitted to the web address above by the same date. Scholarships are available for traditional four-year col- leges as well as community colleges and accredited trade schools.
