SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2016 11 A Coast Guard Auxiliary Siuslaw Station seeks volunteer members The local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is looking for a few good volunteers. With nearby inland waterways, ocean, fishing and recreational boat- ing, Station Siuslaw River is a busy place which counts on that support. The stations’ responsibility includes a large area from about Cape Perpetua south to the Siltcoos River, with much of the activity right here on the Siuslaw River. The auxiliary is a group of volunteer members forming a uniformed unit called a Flotilla. They assist the active-duty U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in a myriad of ways, offering unique volunteer opportunities to give back to the commu- nity. Members some- times work along- side active-duty per- sonnel and share the Coast Guard’s motto “Semper Paratus,” or “Always Ready!” Individuals from Oakridge to Flor- ence make up the local Flotilla 52 membership, which is assigned under the Department of Homeland Security, just like the active- duty USCG. As an auxiliary PHOTO BY DEBORAH HELDT CORDONE Station Siuslaw River Coast Guard Auxiliary members member, volunteers can bring and often use past skills and tal- ents, as well as learn new skills in areas like vessel inspec- tions, safety checks, teaching boating safe- ty courses and partici- pating in boat crew operations. The auxiliary pat- rols inland waterways and lakes, and pro- vides water safety materials at marine dealers and sport- ing goods stores. Administrative and technological tasks are also necessary to support the auxiliary team and station. Hands-on, online and class- room training is offered to auxiliarists, depending on their interests. There is no upper age limit to join the aux- iliary if there is something that you can contribute — and no need to do 50 push-ups. Just be capable of safely accom- plishing the missions you choose. For more information, con- tact Flotilla Commander Norm Hoffman at 541-688- 6069 or Flotilla Vice- Commander Bradley Hooper at the station, 541-997- 2486, option 3, or visit www.cgaux.org. The success of the 20th annual Florence Home & Garden Show was built on the efforts, creativity and support of many people. At this time we would like to thank those people, businesses and organizations. ~ Special Thank You ~ Florence Garden Club, Gloria Cunningham & Karen Childs The entire staff at the Florence Events Center Note of appreciation: Florence in Bloom, Vend West, Mo’s, Florence True Value and St.Vincent dePaul’s. ~ In Remembrance ~ PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center is a communi- ty hospital built with local leadership and community financial support. That means Florence resi- dents have an opportunity to participate in the hospital’s ongoing policies, procedures and practices to insure it oper- ates at the highest possible level in patient and family care. That can only be done with dedicated persons willing to give time and energy to serve on Peace Harbor’s Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC), working with other community members as well as hospital staff. This collaborative effort provides the means to monitor the care received in the hospi- tal setting and take steps for improvement where it may fall short. The PFAC will work best with advisors of all ages from 18 and older being represent- ed. This is critical to the suc- cess of the PFAC since health care needs and experiences vary from age to age, and no one understands and can speak to that better than individuals of each age group. Interested community mem- bers are encouraged to be a part of the PFAC. Being on the committee requires monthly meetings except for July and December, and dedication. Co-chairs of the PFAC, Janis Finley and Bob Horney, have scheduled an informa- tional meeting for anyone interested in being part of this Patient and Family Advisory Council. The meeting will be held Thursday, March 10, in Conference Room C at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Call 541-902-6813 to reserve a seat. Available space limits the number of partici- pants to about 15. Call Janis Finley at 541- 902-6074 or Bob Horney at 541-997-6626 for more infor- mation. It would not happen without the cooperation, participation and effort of the many quality businesses in Florence. We also acknowledge the enthusiasm of our vendors from outside the area who truly believe that our community offers many unique opportunities and some of the friendliest people in the country. The show is the result of months of organization and the hard work of several individuals. We would like to extend our appreciation to all those who have helped establish the Home Show as a positive annual event that the entire community enjoys. We would like to acknowledge our outstanding staff, supportive family, friends, and especially all those who attended this year’s show.
