B&G Club seeks players, coaches for expanding softball program
Boys and Girls Club of
Western Lane County is
expanding its girls fastpitch
softball program.
Until this season, the pro-
gram has only fielded a U14
team made up of sixth- through
eighth-grade girls.
After speaking with a few of
the softball leagues on the
coast, the B&G Club has decid-
ed to expand with the goal of
having enough players for three
teams: a U10, U12 and U14
team.
The program is looking for
girls grades 3 through 8 who
are interested in playing soft-
ball. Must be age 9 by April 1,
2016 to participate.
Practices will start in April,
with games starting in May.
The B&G Club will be hosting
and traveling to play teams
from Waldport, Coos Bay,
North
Bend,
Reedsport,
Bandon and Coquille.
Uniforms
have
been
designed and are waiting to be
ordered.
The program is also looking
for coaches, umpires and any
local businesses that are inter-
ested in sponsoring a team.
The cost to play is $100 per
player, and includes the cost of
the uniform.
Participants must be a cur-
rent Boys and Girls Club mem-
ber (a $25 annual fee).
The B&G Club has income-
based scholarships available.
ODFW to issue single South Coast clam dive permit during April
SALEM — The Oregon
Department of Fish and
Wildlife will award one South
Coast bay clam dive permit
April 15, at ODFW headquar-
ters in Salem.
“The commercial bay clam
dive fishery in Oregon is limit-
ed to 15 permits — 10 coast-
wide permits and five south
coast permits,” said DeAnna
Erickson, license services man-
ager for ODFW. “If the number
of permits falls below 15, we
hold a lottery to bring the num-
ber back up to 15.
“Currently there is one South
Coast permit available.”
South Coast permits are only
valid in Oregon estuaries south
of Heceta Head.
Bay clams are harvested by
licensed inter-tidal commercial
harvesters and also by permit-
ted sub-tidal divers.
Harvest focuses on cockles,
gapers and butter clams.
“Historical landings patterns
and species targeted vary
depending on market demand,
environmental conditions and
population abundances,” said
Mitch Vance, shellfish project
leader for ODFW’s Marine
Resources Program. “Some
restrictions also exist for con-
servation purposes.
“For instance, the season for
gapers is closed from January
to June when they are spawn-
ing.”
Only one application per
vessel or individual will be
accepted.
Applications
must
be
received in the Salem office or
postmarked no later than March
31.
To renew a permit for the
next year, the holder must meet
minimum landing requirements
of five landings of at least 100
pounds each or an annual total
of 2,500 pounds with dive gear.
If there are no landings, the
permit reverts to the state.

The Siuslaw Middle School
(SMS) cross country and track
and field programs will host the
seventh annual Shamrock Run
5K and Fun Run on Saturday,
March 12.
Registration will begin at
7:30 a.m. at the Bridgeport
Market parking lot in Old Town
Florence, next to the Port of
Siuslaw boat ramp.
Proceeds from the fundraiser
provide the two SMS programs
with their largest source of
funding.
The course is terrific for
beginners and experienced run-
ners alike.

There are free races for
younger children and a Fun
Dash (100m) for ages 5 years
old and younger beginning at
8:45 a.m.
The 5K and 2K walk or jog
begins at 9 a.m.

Ages 11 and older for the
5K or 2K: Preregister $10 (with
T-shirt $22)
Ages 6 through 10 for the
2K or 5K on day of race:$10
(no T-shirt)
Ages 11 and older for 5K or
2K on day of race $15 (no T-
shirt)
T-shirts can be ordered on
the day of race for $15.
T-shirts ordered with pre-
registration by Saturday, March
5, will be available at the race;
T-shirts ordered after then will
be available 1 to 2 weeks after
the day of the race.
All proceeds will benefit the
Siuslaw Middle School cross
country and track and field pro-
grams.
The focus of these programs
is on attaining better fitness,
learning perseverance and real-
izing personal improvement.
The middle school program
prepares athletes for the high
school cross country program,
which has earned great respect
across the state for its success
at state competitions.
