previous owner of Waves Hair Salon in
Winchester Bay. I have recently relocated

In Leaving Before the Rains
Come, Alexandra “Bobo” Fuller
of Africa continues her life story,
writing this memoir from her
newly adopted continent after
she marries an American river
guide.
Born in England and trans-
ported to Africa at the age of 3
by her adventurous, courageous,
quirky, and resourceful parents,
Fuller realizes at age 16 that if
she ever severs her ties from the
African continent “an essential
part of [her] connection with this
earth would become forever
detached.”
Yet she does sever that tie for
what she mistakenly perceives as
a safe bet for a settled life in the
States with Charlie Ross, far
from the uncertainty of her life
in Africa.
She thinks her new spouse,
Charlie, “has perfected the art of
knowing how to live” even
though her father has cautioned
her that “most people…want to
be alive for as long as possible
without having any idea whatso-
ever how to live.”

Storyteller Kevin Kling
to perform
On Monday, March 14, the
library is pleased to present
nationally known storyteller,
author, NPR commentator and
playwright Kevin Kling.
He will be performing and
teaching at local schools during
the day and performing at the
library in the evening.
Kling has performed on stages
all over the globe. Well known
for insightful and funny stories,
Kling has worked with some of
America’s most celebrated the-
ater groups, including Second
State Theatre in New York and
the Sundance Institute.

a look at the concept.
Those plans and an archi-
tect’s rendering of what form
landscaping along Highway
101 between the Siuslaw River
and Highway 126 might look
like in the future were present-
ed last month at a public forum.
That conceptual look will be
the primary focus of the March
Edition of “Our Town” on
Coast Radio this afternoon and
tomorrow morning.

renewal and how it works.
Adding to the conversation
will be Chris Zahas, the owner
and principal of Leland
Consulting Group, the eco-

year to help local officials
develop a plan.
Other representatives of
Leland, as well as the Mhyre
Group Architects, will be in the
studio.
That conversation will actu-
ally cap a two-hour program
that will begin with a conversa-
tion with Pam Hickson of

Robert Leo Heilman to
read in Mapleton
Robert Leo Heilman, author
of “Overstory: Zero: Real Life in
Timber Country,” will be read-
ing from his book on Thursday,
March 24, at 5:15 p.m., at the
Mapleton Branch Library.
Heilman, from Myrtle Creek,
Ore., has worked in the timber
industry as well as many other
occupations. His essays are
about small-town life in timber
country Oregon. Light refresh-
ments will be available.

County Spelling Bee.

The final segment of “Our
Town” this week will feature
the Best of the 42nd Northwest
Film Festival Tour. Nine of the
best short films produced by
Northwest filmmakers will be
presented in Florence March
10, including “Memory”, by
Stuart Eagon.
