Rotary’s MHS Student of the Quarter
Volunteer for garden project
Anyone interested in help-
ing kids learn more about gar-
dening in the Siuslaw School
Garden can come to a group
meeting Monday, Feb. 29, at
3:15 p.m., at the Siuslaw
Public Library.
The garden currently has 18
beds with plans to add a green-
house and drip irrigation.
Volunteers are needed to
help with work in the garden,
one-time projects, working
with the kids, grant writing
and community education.

Elementary school to host book fair
Siuslaw Elementary School
(SES), 2221 Oak St., will host
a Scholastic Book Fair from
Monday, Feb. 29 to Friday,
March 4. The fair will run from
4 to 6 p.m. all days except
Wednesday, when it will run
from 4 to 8 p.m.
The Book Fair Diner will be
held Wednesday, March 2,
from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be
free hot dogs, chips, drinks and
cookies.
Special guests will read
books each day at 4:30 p.m.
The book fair theme is
“Feelin’ Groovy: Peace, Love
and Books.” Money raised will
help purchase books for the
SES library, classrooms and
students. Families, faculty and
the community are invited to
attend this fun reading event
that helps inspire children to
become lifelong learners.
The Scholastic Book Fair
offers specially priced books
and educational products,
including popular series,
award-winning titles, new
releases, bestsellers and other
great reads from dozens of
publishers.
Book Fair customers may
help the school build class-
room libraries by purchasing
books through the Classroom
Wish List Program. In addi-
tion, the fair will allow people
to donate change for the pur-
pose of purchasing more books.

DEADWOOD — Upriver
Community
Emergency
Response Team trainings are
scheduled for April 9, 16, 24,
30.
The sessions cover two 3-
hour modules each meeting,
with a 30-minute lunchtime;
the trainings are 9:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. and Frank Nulty is
the instructor.
Those who unable to
attend a session, or have to
leave early, can make up
those modules online at www
.fema.gov/community-emer-
gency-response-teams.
There is also a 3-hour dis-
aster drill scheduled for May
1 at the Mapleton Fire
Station. The first session will
be at the Deadwood
Community Center; an alter-
nate site is available in
Mapleton.
