Over the weekend, four Siuslaw
wrestlers earned their way to the dance
at the 4A state tournament this coming
Friday and Saturday in Portland.
Taking on teams from the Far West
as well as Skyline league, the Vikings
competed in the 4A Sky-West District
3 Regional meet in Klamath Falls
along with wrestlers from Henley,
Phoenix, Mazama, North Valley,
Hidden Valley and Klamath Union
high schools — with the four top qual-
ifiers in each division advancing to
this weekend’s state meet.
Viking senior Dylan Jennings, who
came into the regionals ranked No. 1
at 220 pounds, pinned all three of his
opponents during the two-day meet,
including the championship round,

where he took Dallas Lamphere of
Henley to the mat for the win just 36
seconds into round two.
The win seeded Jennings at No. 1
heading into the state meet.
Fellow senior Talamoa Tupua,
wrestling at 152 pounds, made it to the
title round but narrowly lost to Austin
Tillery of Henley in a 5-3 decision.
Tupua will advance to state seeded
at No. 6 and will take on unseeded
Elmira senior Mason Walker.
Sophomore Ricky Huff pinned
Oscar Baza of Henley in just 1:21 dur-
ing the match for third place, securing
an unseeded spot at state Friday, where
he will open the meet against No. 3
seed Jace Hays of Baker.
Joining the three Viking wrestling
veterans will be freshman Murray
Bingham, in his first year of wrestling.
Bingham placed fourth at regionals

tends to be slower during

WEEKLY
FISHING REPORT FOR
Though the Viks had only one win
this league season at 1-9 (5-17 overall),
the scoreboard showed steady improve-
ment from start to finish in a league that
hosts some of the state’s best competi-
tion in the 4A girls division.
That includes fifth-ranked Brookings-
Harbor, which went undefeated in
league for the second-straight season at
10-0.
On Friday, Siuslaw wrapped up its
season on the road at North Bend, where
the Bulldogs latched onto a three-way
tie for second place with Douglas and
Marshfield after defeating the Vikings
51-30.
Senior post Taylor Dotson led the
Viks with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Fellow senior Sierra Potter had two 3-
pointers and 10 points on the night.
Juniors Claire Waggoner and Destinie
Tatum had 9 boards each.
As the post-season shapes up this
week as North Bend, Marshfield and
Douglas battle it out for the last two
tickets to state, the Vikings will look
back over a season of solid growth —
and lots of potential for next year.
A key element to that potential is
Tatum, who was named as the team’s

offense. Instead, the Viks big men —
sophomore Trent Reavis and senior
Reese Siegel — were able to control the
boards and keep the Bulldogs on a tight
leash.
By halftime, North Bend was still
struggling to generate any real offense
as Siuslaw held the Bulldogs to less
than 20 points in the first half — and a
slim 18-17 North Bend advantage.

In the end, Siuslaw’s near upset at
North Bend during the final game of the
league season last Friday, slipped away
at the free-throw line.
The Vikings threatened to play spoil-
er to all four quarters against the
Bulldogs, who needed the win to secure
second place and a trip to the first round
of playoffs this week.
Siuslaw led 9-5 at the end of the first
quarter after the Viking defense was
able to thwart North Bend’s attempts to
control the tempo with face-paced

Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is fair to good for
both the Siuslaw and Lake
Creek systems. With so
much rain this winter,
anglers have not had that
many quality fishing days
so get out there when you
can because the next few
weeks are typically peak
season.
During higher flows, the
Lake Creek basin tends to
fish better and clear more
quickly. Casting lures, bob-
ber fishing or pulling plugs
are good options.

Winter steelhead fishing
is good with anglers doing
well in the upper to mid
river sections. With so
much rain this winter,
many fish have pushed
upstream quickly. During
higher flows, the upper
