Sailors’ postseason
bid ended by Indians

It was a busy week for the Sailors, who
mounted a run as underdogs in a bid for
the post season. Over the last week, the
Sailors took on three teams and went 2-1,
with the final game — on the road at
Mohawk — ending their postseason
momentum.
Saturday, the Sailors hosted McKenzie
for a tie-breaker to determine who would
advance into the first round of Mountain
West League playoffs. Each team had
defeated the other once during the sea-
son, and also lost one. In Saturday’s
matchup, junior guard Hunter Simington
proved to be the Sailors’ most effective
threat against the Eagles, with Simington
scoring a season-high 25 points.
Simington also had 9 rebounds and 7
steals to lead Mapleton to a decisive 58-
47 win that clinched a playoff game on
the road against Eddyvile the following
Tuesday.
“Our backs were against the wall,”
said Mapleton coach Will Crook. “We
knew they were going to be tough and we
couldn’t make any mistakes.”
In previous matches with Eddyville,
the Sailors had won by 1 point at home
and lost by 3 on the road.
“Our guys were focused and ready to
play right from the opening tipoff,” said
Crook.

Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
tends to be slower during
the winter months. There
are numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity and
have both boat and bank
access.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is fair to good for
both the Siuslaw and Lake
Creek systems. With so
much rain this winter,
anglers have not had that
many quality fishing days
so get out there when you
can because the next few
weeks are typically peak
season.
During higher flows, the
Lake Creek basin tends to
fish better and clear more
quickly. Casting lures, bob-
ber fishing or pulling plugs
are good options.

well in the upper to mid
river sections. With so
much rain this winter,
many fish have pushed
upstream quickly. During
higher flows, the upper
river fishes well. During
lower clear flows, it’s bet-
ter to focus efforts in the
mid to lower river sections.
Casting spinners / spoons,
or floating bait or a jig are
good options.

Given that Siuslaw’s only other win
of the season, albeit a narrow one at
47-45, had come on the road at
Douglas earlier in the season, Viking
seniors playing on their home court
for the last time Tuesday night had
hopes of another win over the Trojans.
With the team’s four seniors —
Preston Mitchell, Kenneth Thrall,
Scott Gordon and Reese Siegel —
starting with sophomore Jared Brandt,

it was once again a virtual stalemate,
with Brandt giving the Viks a slim 9-7
lead to start the second quarter.
Brandt then opened the period with
a 3-pointer, only to have Douglas
score the next 6 points to take a 13-12

Tuesday’s final home game, against
Douglas, by recognizing their three
