2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2016 L ADY S AILORS FINISH SEASON STRONG B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News M APLETON : 26 M OHAWK : 33 I n the final game of their Mapleton basketball careers, seniors Hannah Rodet and Destiny Weber scored all 26 of the Sailors’ points in Friday’s tie-breaker game against Mohawk. “With only six players suited up, we were obviously low on numbers,” said coach Jesika Crook. “But we were high on effort — from our two seniors and a supporting cast that truly excelled.” Rodet scored a team-high 15 points to go with 8 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 blocked shots. Weber chimed in with 11 points, 4 steals, 1 blocked shot and 1 rebound. Weber’s efforts on defense, along with those from fresh- man wing Alyssa West, led to both players fouling out in the fourth quarter. That left a four-person team made up of soph- omore Clarissa Triebskorn, junior France Suvannakorn, freshman Gabrielle Gibney and Rodet, representing the Sailors in the final minutes — and a narrow 33-26 loss that ended postseason hopes for the Sailors. “Even with just four players on the floor, we kept it a close game the entire way,” said Crook. “While it was a loss, it was a great way to end a season that has had many chal- lenges. “And both Hannah and Destiny shined in their final game for Mapleton.” Triebskorn had 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 steals. Gibney had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. West had 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. Suvannakorn had 1 rebounds and 1 blocked shot for the Sailors. Earlier this week, four members of the team were recog- nized by the Mountain West League for their efforts this sea- son. Freshman post Alyssa Richards was named third team All- League, with junior post Josi Hays, Gibney and Rodet given honorable mention by league coaches. Freshman guard Gabrielle Gibney (left) and senior Hannah Rodet were each named to the Mountain West All-League team. Jennings from 1B to a strong showing. “Dylan is the governor of the team,” he said. “He’s the one who keeps us steady.” Jennings is one of three Vikings predicted to qualify for state. Senior Talamoa Tupua is seeded No. 2 at 152 pounds and sophomore Ricky Huff is a No. 3 seed at 113. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance. “Talamoa is the energy, the charismatic one,” Wartnik said. “Dylan is the base. He keeps us in rhythm. He keeps us work- ing as a team. “He’s gotten so much better as a wrestler. He’s come a long way in just the last three weeks.” Siuslaw also has four wrestlers seeded No. 5: fresh- man Matthew Morales at 106, freshman Murray Bingham at NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS 126, junior Scott Simmons at 138 and junior Kainan Lane at 285. “This is a tough region, and anything can happen,” Wartnik said. “Those wrestlers seeded fifth could get in (to state). “I think Murray and Kainan have a legitimate shot at upset- ting somebody.” The Vikings also will enter 11 unseeded wrestlers, includ- ing two girls, junior Eyza Abbas Carrasco at 113 and sen- ior Getzemani Jaimes at 126. Also competing are sopho- mores Patrick Hill and Matthew English at 120, fresh- man Riley Jennings and junior Joaquin Cervantes at 132, sophomore Salvador Sierra at 138, freshman Wyatt Burns and sophomore Ivon Ellsworth- Wayland at 145, junior Nick Steinman at 152 and junior Justin Perkins at 220. That’s quite an improvement over last season, when Wartnik took just six wrestlers to regionals. “Compared to last year, we’re doing great,” said Wartnik, whose has both Tupua and Jennings in his senior English class. “We’re (graduat- ing) some great young men. “They’re going to make a difference in their generation.” And, hopefully, during their last few times on the wrestling mats for Siuslaw this season.
