Siuslaw wrestler Dylan Jennings is
a shadow of his former self, and that
may make him a hard man to beat this
weekend and next.
He and 17 of his fellow Vikings
head to Klamath Falls this week for the
Oregon School Activities Association's
4A Special District 3 regional champi-
onships at Henley High School.
Jennings is Siuslaw’s lone No. 1
seed, and a hungry one at that in the
220-pound weight class he hopes to
dominate.
“I haven’t lost to anyone in our
region this year, so I wasn’t surprised
to be seeded No. 1,” he said.
Targeting the weight class has
meant serious sacrifice. Wrestling
starts before Thanksgiving, carries
through Christmas and well into the
new year.
“The hardest part is watching
yourself at family parties and stuff,”
Jennings said. “This is like the worst
season to lose weight, ever.”
The Vikings senior expects to
start competition Friday at 215
pounds, down from the 255 pounds he
weighed to start the season.
Down from 270 much of his junior
season.
“I started the season at 255, now I’m
an easy 220,” Jennings said. “I like to
cut to like 215, so that it’s easier to stay
on weight for the second day.”
That would be Saturday, when he
hopes to win a title.
“You have to eat a lot at tourna-
ments to stay energized,” Jennings
said.
It’s that energy that his coach, Neil
Wartnik, hopes will inspire the Vikings

MID COAST LAKES
Stocking of rainbow
trout will begin soon in
many mid coast water bod-
ies. Look at the stocking
report to see the full stock-
ing season.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
tends to be slower during
the winter months. There
are numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity and
have both boat and bank
access.

FISHING REPORT FOR
Though it may have been the result
most would have expected for a 1-7
team taking on an 8-0 powerhouse, it
wasn’t for lack of trying as the Lady
Vikings battled injuries and firepower
Friday night against Brookings-Harbor
— which clinched the Far West League
title with the win.
Senior shooter Sierra Potter played
the night with a dislocated finger on her
3-point shooting hand, and junior
Destinie Tatum, the team’s top scorer,
was held to a single free throw due to
hamstring pain. In spite of those chal-
lenges, Tatum still battled hard enough
that she eventually fouled out, and
Potter still managed a 3-pointer in the
game before it was over.

As they have all season, the Vikings
demonstrated a will to win and the talent
to do so, but a lack of being able to close
the deal. Earlier in the week, their
matchup with Marshfield, the state top-
ranked team, really came down to a few
well-timed 3-pointers that kept the
Pirates afloat.

ALSEA RIVER:
Steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
is good with anglers doing
well in the upper to mid
river sections. With so
much rain this winter,
many fish have pushed
upstream quickly. During
higher flows, the upper
river fishes well. During
lower clear flows, it’s bet-
ter to focus efforts in the
mid to lower river sections.
Casting spinners / spoons,
or floating bait or a jig are
good options.

Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is fair to good for
both the Siuslaw and Lake
Creek systems. With so
much rain this winter,
anglers have not had that
many quality fishing days
so get out there when you
can because the next few
weeks are typically peak
season.
During higher flows, the
Lake Creek basin tends to
fish better and clear more
quickly. Casting lures, bob-
ber fishing or pulling plugs
are good options.

Though they were narrowly edged out
36-32 last Thursday at McKenzie, the
Sailors came back to even the score
Saturday during a bid to reach the
league’s basketball playoffs.
This time, Mapleton was able to keep
its big men on the floor and out of foul
trouble.
The result? A decisive 19-point win
over the Eagles that put the Sailors into
last night’s opening round of league
playoffs (after press deadlines) against
another Eagles team — this time at
Eddyville.
Saturday’s 52-33 win was the Sailors
highest-scoring game of the season, and
a dramatic turnaround after a 4-point
