WEEKLY
FISHING REPORT FOR
Despite their 19-2 record and rank-
ing as the 4A’s No. 1 team in the state,
the Pirates found the waters a little
choppy Tuesday night against a scrap-
py Viking team that gave Marshfield
trouble when they met earlier this sea-
son.
In fact, of all the teams the Pirates
faced so far this season, Siuslaw is the
only team to stay within 12 points or
less.
And they did it twice.
Tuesday night in Coos Bay, the
Vikings proved that their near upset

time they met wasn’t a fluke. Which
for a Viking team that is 1-18 overall
and 1-6 in league, is an important
moral victory that the Pirates surely
would liked to have squelched on
their home court Tuesday.
The two teams traded baskets
throughout the first period, with

point of the Pirates with 3 minutes to
go before the half.
But an 11-point run by Marshfield
in those final 3 minutes left Siuslaw
trailing 25-13 by halftime — and with
a deficit the Vikings would carry for
the remainder of the game. In spite of
outscoring the Pirates 7-4 in the third
quarter, Marshfield still carried an 11-
point lead to start the fourth period.

With only four games remaining in
the league season and a narrow one-
game advantage of North Bend, the
Lady Pirates came into Tuesday’s
game taking no chances against a
scrappy Viking team capable of
threatening Marshfield’s grip on sec-
ond place in the Far West.
The Vikings began to make good
on that threat after remaining within 1

Mapleton junior post Nick Smith had
5 points, 3 rebounds and a steal
against the Red Devils.
Though they opened the week with a
tough loss to the Mountain West
League’s second-place Red Devils (10-
2), then were narrowly edged out 36-32
at McKenzie Thursday night, the
Sailors’ bid for a league playoff spot
will go up for grabs today in a rematch
with the Eagles.
The winner will advance into next
week’s MWL playoffs.
Tipoff is at noon, with the Sailors
hosting McKenzie in what will surely be
another nailbiter between two evenly
matched teams.

DUNES CITY — Dunes
City is making plans to host
its annual Oregon Dunes
Triathlon and Duathlon on
Saturday, May 7.
Though the city’s signa-
ture event is several weeks
away, organizers are recruit-
ing volunteers to help staff
the event.
Volunteers provide invalu-
able assistance to ensure that
the races and venues run
smoothly and safely.
Volunteers also play a vital
support role for all of the par-
ticipating athletes by provid-
ing encouragement and hos-
pitality. Many of the athletes
have returned to the Tri/Du
each year because they
appreciate the enthusiastic
volunteers.
The commitment is for
only half a day and all volun-
teers will receive a free T-
shirt.
Again this year, Dunes
City will award a $250 dona-
tion to the organization that
provides the most volunteers.
The organization can be a
civic club, athletic club,
homeowners association or
similar type of group.
Be sure to include your
organization’s name when
registering to volunteer. If
your group has the most vol-
unteers present on race day,
your group will be awarded
with a $250 check.
Volunteers are needed
between about 6 a.m. and 1
p.m. on race day.
