SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2016 Big Creek Road reopens OBITUARIES LEONARD—Ann Leonard, 79, of Florence, passed away Jan. 29, 2016, fol- lowing a r e c e n t diagnosis of lung cancer. She was born Feb. 12, 1936, Ann Leonard to Edna and Howard Barklow in Portland, Ore., where she was raised. She fell in love at the tender age of 17, relocated to Minnesota, married Eugene Darragh and bore two daugh- ters. They were divorced with- in a short period of time and she moved back to Portland. She met the true love of her life, Vaughan Leonard, who fell in love with her and her two toddler girls. They were mar- ried in Mexico in June of 1957 and had a son in 1958. They remained married for 20 years, then decided to part ways in pursuit of different lifestyles; however, they remained the best of friends throughout their lives. When Vaughan’s health began to fail, he came back to live with Ann in Florence for five years, during which they enjoyed each other’s compan- ionship until his death in 2005. Ann held various jobs during her life, including being a vet- erinary assistant for several years, which suited her as she had a great love of animals and always had cats and dogs, including her last two little dogs, Minnie and Norma Jean. She also worked as a book- keeper and as a medical office assistant. She worked for a Eugene surgeon when she retired in 1996 and moved to Florence to pursue her lifelong passion of art. She was an accomplished artist and sold many paintings. She was proud to have had an art show both at the Florence Events Center and at the Siuslaw Public Library. Ann is well-known for her green thumb and has always had beautiful house plants, out- side flowers, vegetable and herb gardens. She is also known for her gourmet cook- ing skills, her ability to pick out a good wine and for knowing all of the best places to dine. One of her favorite things was to “wine and dine” her friends and family. Ann could be quite the “pool shark” and played on women’s and mixed doubles championship pool teams with her youngest daughter for 10 years out of what was then the Spigot Tavern in Eugene. She enjoyed classical music and opera and was a huge fan of Pavarotti. She and her best friend traveled to New York to see him perform at the Met. She was a wiz at crossword puzzles and did them every day, and could beat most any- one at Scrabble. Ann firmly said “no crying” when her diagnosis was known, and would rather those who loved her remember her amazing spirit and enjoy mem- ories of good times spent with her. Ann leaves behind her two daughters, Kathleen Ayres and Carol Lowdell (Mark); her grandchildren: Andy and Luke Lowdell and Audrey and Stuart Blighton; four great-grandchil- dren: Cooper and Radley Blighton and Samantha and Jamison Lowdell; many friends and her two little dogs. Her son, James Leonard, passed away in 2004. No funeral services are planned. Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to the Florence Area Humane Society. TIPTON—Terry Allen Tipton, 57, passed away Jan. 31, 2016, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A long- time resi- dent of Eugene, those who Terry Tipton knew Terry knew the many lives he touched with his beautiful smile and loving nature. Terry was born in Vancouver, Wash., on April 27, 1958. The son of Oron and Loretta Inlow, he was the eldest brother to Tom Inlow and Kim Inlow. Terry was married to Tami Netz-Plank in 1978. They had two beautiful children, Heidi Tipton of Portland and Oron Tipton of Eugene. To remember Terry is to hear a big, deep laugh that was as genuine as it was rich. To know Terry was to know he would lend a hand to any project, lend an ear to anyone in need and tell a story to all. And we loved hearing his stories late into the evening, surrounding a camp- fire and enjoying the smoke. He was an amazing man. In remembrance, please con- sider donating online to: carry itforward.net. Checks may also be sent to “Nightingale,” P.O. Box 1556, Springfield, OR 97477. Please note “Carry It Forward” on your check. To know Terry was to love him. Everyone is invited to share their thoughts on Terry’s Facebook Page: www.face book.com/profile.php?id=1000 11107188599. Cultural Trust to host ‘Funders Conversations’ SALEM — Cultural Trust Manager Aili Schreiner will join with colleagues from the Oregon Cultural Trust’s Cultural Partners — Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office — Feb. 9 through March 3 for “Conversations with Funders,” a 12-stop state tour encouraging cultural nonprof- its to apply for close to $5 million in collective grant funds. The Trust will be in Florence on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Florence Event Center, 715 Quince St., from 4 to 6 p.m. Representatives from the Oregon Community Found- ation and Portland’s Regional Arts and Culture Council also will attend some events. Organizations encouraged to attend “Conversations with Funders” include libraries, arts organizations, museums, IMPOUNDMENT cultural centers, historical societies, arts alliances, liter- ary groups and heritage organ- izations. “There are more than 1,450 cultural nonprofits serving Oregonians,” said Schreiner. “We want to make sure they know about the grant funds that are here to support them.” Among the grant opportuni- ties discussed will be the Cultural Trust’s 2017 Cultural Development Grants. Grant guidelines are now posted on the Trust website at www.culturaltrust.org/grants/ development-grants for an application deadline of April 22. Oregon Cultural Trust Cultural Development Grants recognize and support signifi- cant cultural programs and projects through four grant categories: access, preserva- tion, creativity and capacity. The year 2015 was a suc- cessful fundraising year for the Cultural Trust. A record amount will be available for grants, which last year totaled more than $2.6 million. Cultural Development Grants represent one third of the annual funding the Trust provides to Oregon’s cultural nonprofits. Other funding includes grants to the trust’s five statewide partners — to sup- port their projects and respec- tive grant programs — and to 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions that fund local ini- tiatives and grants. In 2017, Cultural Development Grants are for projects and activities that will occur between Aug.1, 2016, and July 30, 2017.
