“We raised a total of $16,805
by the end of December,
including the $1,000 that was
donated by Ladies of the Elks
in Florence and the individual
checks sent into our local Post
Office Box 1041 in Florence,”
announced Janet Snow, local
volunteer coordinator of the
Red Kettle Campaign in west-
ern Lane County.
Snow made the announce-
ment during two dinners held
on MLK Day to celebrate the
official total. During dinner,
each group contributed to the
conversations about what the
Salvation Army can do next for
western Lane County.
“The bulk of the money
raised is intended for the for-
mation of a new ‘agency fund’
within the Western Lane
Community Foundation,” said
volunteer Geraldine Lucio,
who owns Old Town Barber
Shop. “Once established, a
fixed percentage of the fund
will be paid out annually to the
officers of The Salvation Army
who oversee programs and
services in western Lane
County for their use.”
Local volunteers and sup-
porters plan to hold future
events. Both Snow and Lucio
were nominated for the annual
Siuslaw Awards’ “Volunteer of
the Year” distinction.
Owners of Darlings Resort
and RV Resort shared that they
intend to hold their lighted boat
parade this summer when bet-
ter weather can be counted on,
“We had a good turnout in
December and we had a num-
Council meeting in January
2017.

ber of boats decorated and
ready to go, but the weather
was so fierce we cancelled the
boat parade — and still raised
$1,300,” said Lori Olson.
Owners of The Siuslaw
Riverside Restaurant on Bay
Street, Blaise Khufu and
Melonie Rollin, announced
they will offer Making A
Difference Dinners quarterly
for supporters of The
Salvation Army and other
local charities and churches to
gather socially and discuss
what good works can be done
to support the area.
Frank Nulty, Community
Emergency Response Team
coordinator, was in attendance
and announced that discus-
sions are underway to co-
sponsor a special training ses-
sion in Florence for Central
Coast communities from
Bandon to Lincoln City this
spring.
“The Salvation Army’s
Emergency Disaster Services
Program wants to reach out,
especially to church members,
urging them to be better pre-
pared in advance for any dis-
asters that may strike our
region of the state,” said
Nulty. “However, we have
agreed to be sure anyone from
the general public may partici-
pate.”
Bill Olson, Director of Gift
Planning for The Salvation
Army in the Cascade Division,
was on hand to read a note of
congratulations from Major
Tom Morrow who oversees all
of Lane County.
In his message, Major
Morrow said, “We salute all of
the volunteers and supporters
of the Red Kettle Campaign
and we are amazed that the
communities of Mapleton,
Dunes City and Florence were
able to far exceed their goal of
$10,000 by reaching near
$17,000 in this their first year
of kettle operations in many,
many years.
“Thank you for a job well
done.”

spective.
“Our Officer in Charge,

said Snider.

hardwork and dedication.
“Coast Guard families
have been active members in
scouts, local parades and
community celebrations.
“Most Coast Guard service
members are here in Florence
for just a short period of time
before moving on to other
