Volkswalkers invite everyone
for a walk Tuesday, Feb. 2,
Groundhog Day. February’s
walk will be the Lincoln City
Town Route.
Those who want to carpool
to Lincoln City can meet at
the Commons in Yachats at 9
a.m., or at the Cozy Cove
Resort in Lincoln City at
10:30 a.m.
The 10K walk is rated 2B
for a couple of steep hills and
one section without side-
walks.
There is also a 5K route for
those who want a shorter
walk.
As always, leashed pets
are welcome on walks, but
bring water and clean up
materials. Also, a sturdy 6-
foot leash (not the retractable
type) is required.
On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the
group will hold its monthly
meeting in conjunction with
its annual “chocolate shar-
ing” event. The meeting will
be held at the home of the
Gems’ president in Yachats.
Chocolate sharing will
begin at 5:30 p.m., with the
club meeting at 6 p.m.
Mapleton freshman post Alyssa Richards scored 13 points and nabbed nine rebounds to lead the Sailors against Triangle Lake in a 46-26 loss.

Led by a total team effort,
Viking boys members Patrick
Hill, Aaron Fleetwood, Logan
Lindner, Evan Johnson and
Neil Devera had to eliminate
league powerhouse teams from
Cottage Grove and Marshfield
— a team that had led the dis-
trict all season with a perfect
300 game earlier in the season.
The finals were a stepladder
format,
with
third-seed
Siuslaw facing second-seed
Cottage Grove. The winner of
that match advanced to com-
pete for the title against first-
seed Marshfield.
The Vikings went on to pull
off two major upsets over
Cottage Grove and Marshfield
to secure the district title.
In the girls division, the lady
Vikings also had a great team
effort from Hanna Anderson,
Summer Large, Sequoya
Bernard, Dixie Dyess, Maxine
Jones, Taryn Larson and Abby
Coday, who was also named to
the All-Star team.
After reaching the final as
the third-place seed, Siuslaw
took on Cottage Grove, nar-
rowly losing to the eventual
district champion Lions team
in a two-game match.
In the first game, the Lady
Vikings spotted Cottage Grove
a 26-pin lead. In the second
game, Siuslaw battled back.

Lady Vikings came up just
short of the win needed to
advance to the championship

The Lakers moved ahead 16-
10 with 22 seconds remaining
in the quarter, but Dominic
Wells scored off the glass as
time expired, cutting Triangle
Lake’s lead down to four
points, 16-12, to start the sec-
ond period.
The Lakers scored the first
basket for an 18-12 lead, but
Nick Smith sank a 3-pointer to
pull the Sailors within three
points.
Then, the tide began to
change against Mapleton as the
Lakers sank a pair of 3-pointers
to spark a 20-4 run in the peri-
od, leaving Mapleton down 37-
19 at the half.
In the second half, Mapleton
battled hard, only getting
outscored by eight points in the
third and four periods.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t
enough to overcome the
game’s earlier deficit as the
Lakers won it, 65-37.
Simington led scoring for
the Sailors with a double-dou-
ble 14 points and 10 rebounds,
along with four steals.
Carnes had eight points, two
rebounds and three steals. Gabe
Simington had six points, one
rebound and three blocked
shots. Wells, who left the game
early with a dislocated finger,
had four points four rebounds,
two steals and one blocked
shot.
Smith had three points, six
rebounds, one steal and two
blocked shots. Tyler Packebush
had three points and two
rebounds. Tanner Wilson had
three rebounds, one steal and
one blocked shot.
Zac Croson had three
rebounds for the Sailors.
Last night, Mapleton hosted
Siletz (after press deadlines)
and will return to its home
court again Friday to host
Alsea.
Girls tip off at 5:30 p.m., fol-
lowed by the boys at 7 p.m.
The loss put the Vikings at 1-
2 in league (4-10 overall) and
in a tie for fourth with North
Bend heading into last night’s
road game at Douglas (after
press deadlines).
That same night, Marshfield
defeated North Bend, 40-31,
and Douglas easily beat win-
less South Umpqua, 59-29.
In the boys match-up, it took
the Bruins a final push in the
fourth quarter to out-distance
the Vikings, who remained
within five or fewer points for
most of the game.
Sophomore forward Jared
Brandt had his best perform-
ance of the season, leading the
Viks with 11 points. Senior
post Reese Siegel had seven
points, sophomore forward
Jakob Hickson had five points,
with four points each from sen-
iors Kenneth Thrall and
Preston Mitchell.
The Viks were at their clos-
est in the second period, when a
3-pointer from Hickson off the
bench brought Siuslaw within
three points nearing the half.
And while the Viks kept
things close throughout the
third period, Brookings senior
Brandon Curtin sank 13 of his
game-high 24 points in that
quarter to keep the game out of
Siuslaw’s reach.
Last night, the Vikings were
at Douglas (after press dead-
lines) with both teams looking
for their first league win.
Friday, the Vikings will host
North Bend (1-2), with the girls
tipping off at 6 p.m., followed
by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
With the third-place finish,
Siuslaw qualified to go to the
Oregon State High School
Bowling Championships at the
Epicenter Bowling Center in
Klamath Falls, Feb. 26 through
28.
With the bowling teams
being self-funded, any dona-
