Fee stations to be consolidated
to reduce theft, vandalism
REEDSPORT — Repeated
theft and vandalism of fee sta-
tions in isolated locations
along the Oregon Coast is
causing Siuslaw National
Forest officials to reconsider
how it collects user fees that
support local recreational
activities.
The frequently targeted fee
stations will be removed, and
visitors will be directed to
nearby fee stations in more
secure locations or to local
businesses that serve as recre-
ation pass vendors.
“Providing safe and enjoy-
able recreational opportunities
to the public is a Forest
Service priority, and recreation
fees play an important role in
that mission,” said Tom
Johnson, the recreation coordi-
nator who oversees the area’s
fee collection program.
The selected fee stations are
expected to be removed by
April 2016. Affected sites will
have directions posted to the
next closest fee station or pass
vendor.
A list of recreation pass ven-
dors throughout Oregon and
Washington is continually
updated under the “Passes and
Permits” section at www.fs.
usda.gov/siuslaw.
Online pass sales also are
available through the site.

NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS
Junior guard Brogan Cornish and senior guard Kenneth Thrall return to the hardwood.
Viks
from 1B
thanks to a 3-pointer at the end
of the quarter.
A pitch from Hickson to
Mitchell at the start of the second
quarter put Siuslaw within four,
with Cornish sinking a pair of
free throws to make it a single-
bucket game.
Both teams traded baskets for
the remainder of the period.
Missed free-throw attempts by
Marshfield allowed the Vikings
to close the gap as Mitchell
scored a breakaway layup to
make it 19-20 with 2:24 before
the half.
A charity shot by the Pirates
was the final score of the half,
leaving Siuslaw one basket
away, 21-19, at the break.
Coming into the top of the
third quarter, Siegel attacked the
basket and tied the game. The
Pirates answered at the opposite
end of the court, only to have
senior guard Kenneth Thrall
drain a long 3-pointer to give the
Viks their first lead, 24-23.
Marshfield scored on the
return, but Thrall answered again
from well outside the arc, 27-25.
Unfortunately for the Viks, the
Pirates then went on a 15-0 run
that, despite Siuslaw’s best
efforts, became too much to
overcome down the stretch.
In the meantime, the Viks con-
tinued to battle.
Trailing 43-30 to start the final
quarter, Siuslaw scored the first
six points of the quarter with a
free throw from Siegel, steal and
fastbreak from Mitchell, and a 3-
pointer from Hickson that cut the
Pirates’ lead to seven.
Dakotah Hill, Owner
As the clock cleared the 3:00
mark, the Viks were down 51-41
as the Pirates went into a delay
game to squander the clock and
force Siuslaw to foul for posses-
sion.
The ploy worked as
Marshfield secured the win, 53-
43.
The win was Marshfield’s
14th in 16 games.
“We saw how we were capa-
ble of competing,” said Mitchell.
“It was a good night for us as a
team.”
Last night, the Vikings (0-2)
were on the road at Brookings
(1-1) after press deadlines.
Tuesday, Siuslaw will be at
Douglas.
