The Viking girls team improved to 4-8 after
picking up their third win in the last four
games Friday night at South Umpqua.
The matchup kicked off the Far West
League season, with junior guard Destinie
Tatum and senior post Taylor Dotson joining
forces to combine their talents for 30 points
against the Lancers — who were dealt their
11th consecutive loss that night.
Tatum led all scoring with a double-double,
Siuslaw senior post Taylor Dotson had 13
points and six rebounds in the Vikings’
win at South Umpqua on Friday night.

going 8-of-18 from the field for 17 points. She
also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Dotson scored 13 points, many off the
glass, where she also claimed six defensive
boards.
The wins put Siuslaw, Brookings-Harbor
and Douglas at the top of the league at 1-0.
That same night, the Viking boys opened
the league season in a loss to the Lancers, 53-
20, with senior Preston Mitchell leading the
Viks on the scoreboard with nine points.
A third-period 21-1 scoring run by the
Lancers, along with 7-of-21 free-throw shoot-
ing by Siuslaw, put the game out of reach for
the Vikings.
Last night, Siuslaw hosted Marshfield
(after press deadlines).
Friday, the Vikings are on the road at
Brookings-Harbor.
Girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys
at 7:30 p.m.

“This is a special team,” Siuslaw
coach Neil Wartnik said in the early
part of Saturday’s annual Nick Lutz
Invitational hosted by the Vikings.
“Not since those days of Nicky (Lutz)
have I had a group quite like this. The
work ethic, the heart, commitment and
camaraderie — it’s all there.”
And thanks to standout performanc-
es by sophomore 113-pounder Ricky
Huff and freshman 106-pounder
Matthew Morales, a pair of tourna-
ment titles were also there.
For Huff, who was seeded second in
yesterday’s meet, the win underscored
an ongoing stellar season with only
one loss so far, to a 5A wrestler at the
multi-divisional Bend Invitational a
week earlier.

Both Sailors teams were on the road
at Lowell High School Friday, taking
on the top-ranked Red Devils in a pair
of tough losses.
In the girls game, the Lady Sailors
stayed within striking range for the
first half, trailing just 21-10 at the end
of the second period.
“We played a great first half,” said
Mapleton coach Jesika Crook.
“Lowell is one of the top three teams,
so we were feeling pretty good about
keeping their scoring relatively low.
Our defense was on point and our
offense was improving.”
But foul trouble in the second half
began to take its toll on the Sailors’
small roster.
Josi Hays, Hannah Rodet and
Gabrielle Gibney each fouled out in
the fourth period, striking a blow to
Mapleton’s offensive machine.
“Lowell was able to take advantage
of that,” said Crook. “Still, I was
happy with the improvement we’re
