and freshman Annabel
Tupua led Siuslaw
with nine rebounds
apiece.
The next night, the
Vikings
faced
Klamath Union, a
team that had beaten
the Far West League’s
South Umpqua 44-18
the previous day.
However, led by
senior point guard
Sierra Potter, who
went 4-of-5 from
beyond the arc with 14
points, Siuslaw was
able to defeat the
Pelicans, 48-44 and
pick up their third win
of the season (3-8).
Tupua scored nine
points and sophomore
Marika White had
eight points for the
Vikings.
Off the boards,
freshman
Madison
Reynolds led the team
in rebounding with 12.

The tournament matched up
six teams each from the Far
West and Sky-Em leagues.

took on host Phoenix and lost
48-25 to go 0-11 heading into
the start of league play this
Friday night at South Umpqua.

Eagles to just seven points for
the remainder of the game.
“It felt good to finally get a
win,” said Mapleton girls coach
Jesika Crook. “It wasn’t pretty,
but a win nonetheless. Though
we didn’t play to our full offen-
sive potential, our defense held
Eddyville to just seven point —
which was great.”
The Sailors aggressiveness off
the glass was a huge part of their
defensive
effort,

line with 15 seconds left,
where he gave the Sailors 1
36-35 lead.
“That freethrow was huge
for us in the last seconds,”
said Crook.
After a defensive stop with
10 seconds on the clock, Gabe
Simington inbound the ball to
his cousin, Hunter, who read
the defense and darted down
the court as Gabe lobbed him
the ball. Making the catch in
full stride, Hunter took it in
for a layup and a 38-35 lead
with five seconds on the
clock.
The Eagles got the final
possession and attacked the
basket, hoping for a foul but
didn’t get one. Though
Eddyville was able to score on
the drive, Wells’ earlier
freethrow gave Mapleton a
one-point as the clock ran out,
38-37.
“It was great to get a win
for the guys who have worked
so hard but haven’t had it pay
off in the final score,” said
Crook.
Wells, Smith and Hunter
Simington combined for 47
offensive rebounds in the
game, with Simington making

St., in the heart of town. In
addition, there will be speakers,
demonstrations and fun things
to do for all ages.
Noted geologist William Orr
will speak Saturday at 11 a.m.,
and his topic will be
“Lagerstatten:
Spectacular
Fossil Locations.”
On Sunday, at 1 p.m., Guy
DiTorris, also known as “The
Fossil Guy,” will share his
knowledge of local fossils
found on the central Oregon
coast beaches. There will also
be a representative from the
Cape Perpetua Visitor Center

coast beaches.
Eddyville’s possessions and
holding them to single shot
attempts on those possessions.
Josi Hays had 10 rebounds in
the first period alone, along with
a steal, block and three points by
the end of the game.
“Josi got into foul trouble
early,” said Crook. “So she was-
n’t able to play a complete game.
But she obviously made her pres-
ence known when she was in.”
Mapleton held Eddyville to a
free throw in the second period,
then just three points in the third
quarter en route to the 13-7 win.

blocked shot.

points, four rebounds and two
steals. Evan Moso had two
points, seven rebounds and
five steals against Eddyville.
“It was a complete effort by
the team,” said Crook.
“Everybody played an impor-
tant role. Hopefully, we can
take that momentum and build
off of it this week.”
Last night (after press dead-
lines), the Sailors were at
Mohawk. Friday, they will be
on the road at Lowell.
Tipoff is 7 p.m.
This year, the festival will
offer a raffle for a valuable bas-
ket of fine prizes from many
local merchants. The basket
will include a gift certificate for
a two-night stay at the newly
refurbished Ocean Creek Bed
and Breakfast in Yachats.
In keeping with the festival’s
commitment to preserving and
enjoying the beautiful natural
environment that surrounds the
Yachats area, proceeds from
the raffle will be contributed to
the historic Little Log Church
Museum’s garden enhancement
projects.
