Bob Jackson, 94, died early
Thursday morning. Jackson had
been undergoing treatment for cancer.
Jackson was born Sept. 19, 1921, in
Westlake, south of Florence. He remained
a resident of the greater area for most of
his life, later moving to Greentrees Village
off Rhododendron Drive.
Jackson described himself as having a
lifetime obsession with fast boats, cars and
airplanes. Besides his love for cars, which
began on the shores of Siltcoos Lake in the
early 1930s, he loved his wife Peggy. In
December 2015, they celebrated 71
years of marriage.
They had three children together,
Rob, Sandi and Ron, and numerous
grandchildren. Ron died in 2013.
Jackson was many things in his life:
car enthusiast, artist, logger, boater, vet-
eran, husband, father, actor and writer.

moved to Greentrees community
from the Sandy/Boring area east of
Portland. We had the fortune to purchase a
home on the Siuslaw River just one house
away from Bob Jackson. A lot of you know
Bob from his articles regularly published in
the Siuslaw News.
Bob died peacefully in the wee hours of
Thursday, Jan. 7. He and his wife Peggy
were like parents to my husband and
myself, in fact I usually called him dad.
His family became our family and his
daughter is now like a sister to me, in fact
we call each other sis.
If you remember, he wrote an article
called “A Dog Named Mocha.” That was
our yellow lab. He loved Mocha. We met
almost immediately after we moved in while
walking our dogs. Mocha ran between Bob’s
legs, as she did with people she approved of,
and waited to get her back petted.

The Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce announced the 14 businesses,
restaurants and nonprofits nominated for
the eighth annual Siuslaw Business
Awards on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
The awards will be presented during a
banquet at 6 p.m. at the Florence Events
Center, 715 Quince St.
Awards for First Citizen, Future First
Citizen and Distinguished Service will
also be presented that night.
The Community Caring Award
received three nominations: Cross Road
Assembly, Korando Dental Group and
Oregon Pacific Bank.
The Curb Appeal Award will go to
either Old Town Barbershop or the
Siuslaw River Bridge Interpretive Center.
The Excellence in Customer Service
Award received three nominations:
Banner Bank, Hoagland Properties and
Rosa’s Florence Mexican Restaurant.
The Nonprofit Achievement Award
features three nominees: Kiwanis Club of
Florence, Oregon Coast Military Museum
and The Salvation Army.
The Stu Johnston Business of the Year
Award will go to either Foglio Trucking
or Homegrown Public House.
This year, a new category, Innovation
in Business, will be presented to a busi-
ness that has introduced an innovative
product or service, or operates in a mode
where innovation is built into the culture
of the company. Sand Master Park was
the only nominee.
Nominees were selected by community
members or businesses for the aforemen-
tioned awards. Tickets to the event are
$35 and available at the chamber, 290
