This time of year is typically the most produc- tive. Recent rains and big tide should help to move new fish into the lakes. The West Lake Boat Ramp at Siltcoos has been close for repairs but there is a neighboring private ramp that can be utilized. Look to fish near the lake outlet and by the major tributaries that enter the lakes. Casting or trolling spinners or various plugs can be effective. Eight teams were on hand for the tournament, which included district teams from along the coast such as Marshfield and North Bend, as well as teams from Springfield and Cottage Grove. The tournament was one of the last remaining opportunities to prepare for district at the end of the month. In Saturday’s tournament, teams bowled 16 Baker games, with each team member bowling two frames per game in the qualifying round. After that, teams bowled eight more Baker games for the semi-finals. The Vikings finished third in the qualifying round with a combined 16- game total of 2,700 for an average score of 169. Cape Perpetua series to explore climate, salmon YACHATS — From their start in freshwater streams to the depths of the ocean and back again, few Pacific Northwest species can handle diverse environs as much as salmonids. But how well will salmon’s capacity for change serve them in the uncharted waters of changing climatic condi- tions? Dr. Rebecca Flitcroft, Ph.D., a fish biologist with the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station, will share her latest research and offer her assessment at the next Cape Perpetua Winter Discovery Series at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Visitor Center, 2400 S. Highway. 101, three miles south of Yachats. “Survival in Times of Change: Climate and Salmon of the Oregon Coast Range” delves into the dynamic genetic lineage of salmon to unearth clues that may provide for adaptations necessary to the species’ survival. Dr. Flitcroft’s research focuses on aquatic systems from river headwaters to the ocean. Her analysis bridges the connection of stream networks and estuaries to the aquatic species that depend upon them. The Cape Perpetua Winter Discovery Series is an opportunity to explore topics and resources relevant to the Oregon Coast during the off-sea- son months between November and March. All presentations and guided walks are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. Upcoming Winter Discover Series event: Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. — Land/Sea Conservation Issues: Cape Perpetua’s unique connection between protected coastal rainforest and marine reserve provides an appropriate backdrop in the conversation for land/sea conser- vation. Paul Engelmeyer has directed Portland Audubon’s Ten Mile Creek coastal conservation program since 1990 and will share the latest land/sea conservation issues. No RSVPs necessary. If you are thinking of selling your home, now is the time to start sprucing it up. Here are a few tips to help you get going: 1) Reduce the clutter. 2) Paint. Fresh paint in neutral colors makes rooms look larger. 3) Make minor repairs. 4) Repair leaky roofs. One tiny stain makes buyers question the entire roof. 5) Identify property lines and corners. 6) Organize the kitchen. Clean off counters. 7) Exterminate. One bug can scare off a buyer. 8) Update the bath. 9) Put away valuables. 10) Give it curb appeal. Prune bushes, add flowers, paint the front door. 11) Eliminate odors.
