The coho salmon fish-
eries in S ILTCOOS and
T AHKENITCH lakes are
slow to fair. This time of
year is typically the most
productive. Recent rains
and big tide should help to
move new fish into the
lakes.
The West Lake Boat
Ramp at Siltcoos has been
close for repairs but there
is a neighboring private
ramp that can be utilized.
Look to fish near the lake
outlet and by the major
tributaries that enter the
lakes. Casting or trolling
spinners or various plugs
can be effective.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
tends to be slower during
the winter months. There
are numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity and
have both boat and bank
access.

The fall Chinook fishery
is very slow and basically
over for the season. Any
remaining fish are in
spawning condition.
December is considered
to be the start of the winter
steelhead run. Look for
small numbers of fish to be
in the lower river above the
head of tide this early in
the season. Casting lures or
bobber fishing can be pro-
ductive during low clear
flows.

Road repair on North Jetty to begin Tuesday
Beginning this Tuesday, Jan. 5,
North Jetty Road past Harbor Vista
County Campground will be undergo-
ing road maintenance that is expected
to continue through Friday, Jan. 8.

Repair work will be taking place
each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as
crews level and resurface portions of
the road.
Expect delays and possible road
closures during those times.

Commercial Dungeness crab season opens Monday
NEWPORT — Fresh Oregon
Dungeness crab is back on the menu
after fishery managers determined the
fishery is ready to open Monday, Jan.
4, along the entire Oregon coast.
Fishery managers exercised an
abundance of caution in opening the
crab season this year due to unusual
levels of domoic acid found in crabs
along Oregon’s southern coast.
The month-long delay in opening
the season allowed for additional test-
ing for domoic acid in order to provide
confidence that crab harvested from
Oregon waters are safe to consume
and of excellent quality.
“Along with the state agencies, the
Oregon commercial Dungeness crab
industry has taken a very proactive
and precautionary approach to the
opening of this crab season in the
interest of public safety,” says Caren
Braby, ODFW Marine Resources
Program Manager.
Testing of crab in recent weeks
show the elevated levels of domoic
acid in the southern half of the state
have decreased and are all below U.S.
Food and Drug Administration alert

Based on these results and consulta-
tions with the Oregon Department of
Agriculture, the Oregon commercial
crab industry and Washington and
California Departments of Fish and
Wildlife, the Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife is opening the ocean
commercial Dungeness crab season
along the entire Oregon coast just after
the New Year, Jan 4.
Commercial crab boat lights began
dotting the horizon yesterday as boats
were allowed to set gear three days
prior to the fishery opening.
The recreational harvest of
Dungeness crab in Oregon’s bays and
ocean is currently open coastwide.
As the season gets underway, state
agencies will continue to monitor
marine biotoxins in shellfish to ensure
that the concentrations remain below
the alert level to ensure the consumer
safety.
