Both Homegrown and Agrarian Ales believe in supporting local farms and producers. The menu will reflect this belief. Join them Monday, Jan. 11, at 5:30 p.m. for this collabora- tive beer-pairing experience. A limited number of tickets are available at Homegrown, 294 Laurel St. in Florence. Agrarian Ales, in Harrisburg near Eugene, is located on Crossroad Farms, where the owners produce ales made with a variety of hops and herbs grown using organic practices, combined with water from their aquifer and grains and other ingredients from neighboring farms. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge The Mechanical By Ian Tregillis Book review by Susie Voth What fun it is to travel back in time to 1926 and visit New France (the country now known as Canada), the Netherlands and France. “The Mechanical” is a blend of alternate history and steampunk genres. The book is populated with a variety of mechanicals called Clakkers. There are military mechani- cals created for their strength and military capabilities. Stemwinders, the rarest, most feared, and mysterious type of Clakkers, have four legs and four arms and do not communi- cate, but blindly follow orders. Finally, the servitor-class mechanicals, the lowest of the Clakkers, built to serve their human masters, and ultimately the Rightful Monarch of the Dutch Empire, Queen Margreet. Jax is a servitor Clakker. Through his thoughts and actions, the reader learns that Clakkers are not merely machines: they have desires. However, any action on their desires is prevented by a “geas” or obligation set by a Clakkers’ owner. Any attempt to delay the completion of geas is prevented Story Time at the library Don’t forget that our youngest patrons (with their parents) are invited and encouraged to attend exciting story times each Tuesday and Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Ms. Gayle entertains with a variety of stories, followed by fun crafts and games. Us TOO Florence recognizes Dr. Hoff at lunch meeting At the Dec. 15 meeting of the Us TOO Florence Lunch Bunch, Bob Horney, fac- ilitator of Us TOO Florence, presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Doug Hoff for his nearly five years of meeting monthly with the group. The certificate, signed by Horney and Tom Kirk, presi- dent and CEO of Us TOO International, was in recogni- tion of Us TOO’s sincere appreciation of the time, expertise and personal inter- est Dr. Hoff took in every per- son who attended the Us TOO Florence Lunch Bunch. Every lunch with Dr. Hoff was like an hour’s office visit in the clinic, helping men gain vital information about their prostate cancer journey. This was Dr. Hoff’s final meeting with the Lunch Bunch. Starting in January, he will be providing urological services on a rotating basis with three other urologists at Oregon Urology Institute (OUI) to veterans seeking service at the new VA Clinic in Eugene. Us TOO Florence regrets losing Dr. Hoff’s camaraderie and compassionate care, but are pleased that the veterans will have access to his urolog- ical skills. May the joy of the season make all your wishes come true. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. ® CALL ME TODAY. 541-999-5083 1101447.1 by pain. The longer a Clakker delays, the more severe the pain. Jax heard rumors of rogue Clakkers, Clakkers that don’t suffer the pain of geas, and don’t follow orders. but have free-will. One such rogue was captured and brought before Queen Margreet, who demanded he kneel before her. “No,” said the Clakker to the queen. “I prefer not.” The queen could not allow this Clakker to survive — how- ever, in his final moments, when humans heard the clattering of fear, Clakkers heard something quite different — Clockmakers lie. The audiobook is most excel- lently read by Chris Kayser. He was able to pronounce words specifically made-up for this book. That is quite a feat, partic- ularly the names of the Clakkers such as Jalyksegethistrovantus (so much easier to just say Jaz). 5 A Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., invites you to enjoy “stormy weather” January through February, when gallery membership will join together as they create their own “Stormy Weather” art piece. Local singer songwriter Stephen McVay will bring his soulfull violin into Backstreet’s New Year’s mix, along with his fine guitar. He’ll set the moods with his own beautiful songs and their sweet harmonies, as well as those of others we know and love so well. Greet the New Year with the reception Saturday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. The gallery will be loaded with great food, unique art, live entertainment and the merriment in celebration of 2016.
