OBITUARIES
GEERS—Edward Joseph
Geers, Jr., 71, of Scappoose,
Ore., former-
ly of Flo-
rence, passed
away
on
Dec.
15,
2015, after a
long illness.
Edward
was born in
Edward Geers Cincinnati,
Ohio,
in
1944, to Edward and Romaine
Geers. He grew up there with
three brothers: Bill, Bob and
Joe.
Edward graduated from the
Alexian Brothers School of
Nursing in Chicago, followed
by the St. Francis School of
Anesthesia, where he became a
Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetist, a.k.a. “The Gas
Man.”
Ed married Kylie Ann
Larson in 1968. They had two
children (Sarah and David) then
moved to Florence, in 1973.
They adopted two more chil-
dren
(Michelle
and
Christopher) in 1976.
Ed worked at PeaceHealth
Hospital providing anesthesia
for more than 30 years.
In his spare time, Ed worked
and volunteered in a variety of
interesting pursuits: commer-
cial fisherman, volunteer fire-
fighter, gas station attendant,
mechanic and real estate agent.
He served on the Siuslaw
School Board for more than a
dozen years.
In retirement, Ed moved to
Scappoose to be close to his
family. He served on the Board
at Springlake Park and lived in
the Rose Valley community for
more than five years, making
many good friends.
Ed is survived by his broth-
ers: Bill (Maryanne) of
Crawfordville, Fla., and Joe
(Eileen) of Deltona, Fla.; sister-
in-law Elizabeth Geers of
Charlotte, N.C.; his children:

Scappoose, David, Michelle,
and Christopher; former wife
Kylie King; beloved grandchil-
dren Anika and Kevin Havlik;
and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and a brother, Bob
Geers.

Richmond Ave., in Portland,
Ore. A funeral mass and recep-
tion will be held Monday, Dec.
21, at 11 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church, 51555 Old
Portland Road., in Scappoose.
A celebration of life in
Florence is planned for May.
In remembrance, consider
doing a corporal work of mercy.
Ed, a lifelong Catholic, would
love to have you do something
for others.
BUTT—Charles William
“Bill” Butt, 97, of Florence,
died Dec.
15, 2015,
following
the death of
his beloved
w i f e ,
Vi r g i n i a ,
just
eight
days prior.
Bill was
Charles Butt
born in Peru,
Ind., and grew up on his dad’s
farm. What he remembered
most fondly about farming
were his two horses, which he
used for plowing. He trained
them to do the work without too
much supervision from himself.
He knew that he didn’t really
want farming as a career and
had many different jobs during
his working lifetime. He liked
selling cars and did that very
successfully until he became a
parts manager for General
Motors.
While living and working in
Peru, Bill was appointed
Superintendent of Sunday
Schools for the First Baptist
Church. During his time in that
volunteer job, Bill increased the
attendance from about 30 per
Sunday to over 300 members.
He and Virginia moved to
Southern California, where
they both worked — Bill as a
Parts Manager and Virginia as
the bookkeeper in a Bible book
store.
They
both
enjoyed
California where they were
close to their daughter Kate and
the two granddaughters Lisa
Lee and Lorrie Lynn, and Bill’s
sister Marge Hodson and her
husband Gene.
One of their favorite “volun-
teer” jobs while there was when
they were voted to take over a
Square Dance Club in
Monrovia. There again, they
increased the circles from two
to about 20.
They loved square dancing.
After retiring and travelling
all around the country (and
China, too), they spent a lot of
time in Florence and eventually
moved here. Bill and Virginia
loved Florence and really
enjoyed their volunteer job of
some 20 years as head ushers at
the Florence Events Center.
Bill is survived by his daugh-
ter, Kate Fishback; his two
granddaughters: Lisa Lee and
Lorrie Lynn; his great grand-
son, Eric Matthew; his sister,
Marge Hodson; and his brother-
in-law, Don Chapin.
There will be a memorial
service for Bill and Virginia on
Sunday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m. at
Community Baptist Church in
Florence.
Burns’s Riverside Chapel
Florence Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
KNEAPER—Robert “Bob”
Kneaper, 101, of Deadwood,
passed away Dec. 13, 2015.
A memorial celebration of
his life will be held Sunday,
Dec. 20, beginning at 11 a.m.,
at the Florence Seventh Day
Adventist Church.
A reception will follow.
