Churchill may have edged out Thurston in team scoring, 243-241, at the Springfield WrestlingInvitational over the weekend, but for Vikings Ricky Huff and Talamoa Tupua, the victories in their respective weight classes were decisive. At 113 pounds, Huff, a sophomore, pinned his way to the championship, going 3-0 on the day. In the title round against Springfield’s Jeremy Smith, Huff spent 65 seconds on the mat PIN TOURNEY TITLES before pinning his opponent. Meanwhile, Tupua, a senior wrestling at 160 pounds, went 4-0 on Saturday and beat Churchill’s Justin Kearney 2-1 for the championship. As a team, the Vikings finished sev- enth overall in a field of 14 schools from different classifications. At 106 pounds, freshman Matthew Morales placed third with two wins and one loss. Viking junior Scott Simmons, wrestling at 138 pounds, placed sec- ond after going 3-1 with wins over Churchill’s Evan Powell (fall), Pleasant Hill’s Cody McKee (fall) and Springfield’s Akayen Dalton (fall). Nick Steinman, a junior, was 2-2 at the meet in the 160-pound division, defeating Wyatt Seidel of Sheldon (6- 2) and Spencer Christian of South Salem (by fall). Heavyweight senior Dylan Jennings was 1-2, defeating Eduardo Montes of South Salem decisively, 12-1. Fellow heavyweight Kainan Lane, a junior, was also 1-2, with a win in double overtime against Ruben Rojas of South Salem, 7-5. Siuslaw (115) finished in the mid- dle of the pack and three points ahead of eighth-place South Salem (112), followed by Corvallis (104), Siletz Valley (80.5), Ashland (80), Pleasant Hill (75), North Eugene (70) and Lakeridge (56). Summit (155.5), Sheldon (143), Springfield (131) and Elmira (125) finished third through sixth, respec- tively. In the qualifying round, the Viks bowled 24 Baker games, with each team member bowling two frames per 10-frame game. This time of year is typically the most productive. Recent rains and big tide should help to move new fish into the lakes. The West Lake Boat Ramp at Siltcoos has been close for repairs but there is a neighboring private ramp that can be utilized. Look to fish near the lake outlet and by the major tributaries that enter the lakes. Casting or trolling spinners or various plugs can be effective. Fishing for the various warm water fish species tends to be slower during the winter months. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can pro- vide good opportunity and have both boat and bank access. SIUSLAW RIVER: Chinook, steelhead The fall Chinook fishery is very slow and basically over for the season. Any remaining fish are in spawning condition. December is considered to be the start of the winter steelhead run. Look for small numbers of fish to be in the lower river above the head of tide this early in the season. Casting lures or bobber fishing can be pro- ductive during low clear flows. ALSEA RIVER: Chinook, steelhead The fall Chinook fishery is very slow. Most remain- ing fish are actively spawn- ing.
