OBITUARIES
BUTT—Virginia
Lee
(Chapin) Butt, 94, of Florence,
died Dec. 7,
2015,
of
Alzheimer-
related con-
ditions.
Vi r g i n i a
was born and
grew up in
Peru, Ind.
She went
Virginia Butt
to Franklin
College and returned to Peru to
hold a number of different jobs,
principally as secretary of the
First Baptist Church.
It was, however, while she
was working as the receptionist
at a doctor’s office that she met
her future husband, Charles
William “Bill” Butt.
They were married soon
thereafter.
When their daughter Kate
married and moved to
California, Bill and Virginia
soon followed.
When they “finished” their
working careers, they traveled
throughout the United States in
their motorhome looking for a
place to retire and frequently
ended up in Florence. They fell
in love with Florence and
bought a home and settled.
Virginia had taken up paint-
ing and in addition to creating
many beautiful pictures, she
started a painting class at the
Community Baptist Church
where she was a member.
Her students loved her —
and the class.
Most local people will,
however, remember Virgina
(and Bill) as lead ushers at the
Florence Events Center,
where they usually took
tickets. The lines always
moved slowly because so
many people wanted hugs as
Virginia and Bill took their
tickets.
Virginia is survived by Bill,
her husband of 74 years;
Kate, their daughter; Lisa Lee
and Lorrie Lynn, her grand-
daughters; Eric Suarez, her
great-grandson; and her
brother, Don.
Virginia will live forever in
the hearts of those who knew
and loved her.
A memorial service will be
held Sunday, Dec. 20, at 3
p.m. at the Community
Baptist Church in Florence.

Local Operation Christmas Child collects record gifts
Thousands of children will
soon experience the joy of
Christmas, thanks to the
Florence community.
Residents packed empty
shoeboxes with small items
like toys, school supplies and
hygiene items for Operation
Christmas Child, a project of
Samaritan’s Purse that sends
gifts to children living in dif-
ficult situations around the
world.
Florence volunteers and
residents contributed to the
Eugene Operation Christmas
Child Area Team collection of
more than 13,320 shoebox
gifts for the project this year,
a record over last year’s area
collection of 12,428 gifts.
For those who missed
National Collection Week,
you can still get involved.
Through the Samaritan’s
Purse website, where you can
virtually “pack” a shoebox,
allowing anyone with a com-
puter or mobile device to pro-
vide a tangible gift to a child
a world away.
At samaritanspurse.org/
buildonline, visitors can
select a child’s age and
gender, shop through an
online selection of culturally
relevant gifts, and finish
by uploading a photo and
writing a note of encourage-
ment to the child who will
receive it.
After the shoeboxes are
packed and sent by the
Operation Christmas Child
team, participants can discov-
er where in the world their
gifts will be delivered.
It is a convenient yet mean-
ingful way to join in a project
that brings hope to children in
need.
The virtual-packing tool
also
offers
participants
the option to challenge
friends to participate or the
opportunity to share the gift
of giving through a shoebox
gift card.
Operation Christmas Child
is a project of Samaritan’s
Purse,
an
international
Christian relief and evangel-
ism organization.
Since 1993, Operation
Christmas Child has delivered
gift-filled shoeboxes to more
than 124 million children in
more than 150 countries and
territories.
In
2015,
Operation
Christmas Child hopes to
deliver gifts to another 11
million children.

how to participate in
Operation Christmas Child,
