The Sailors girls and boys
basketball teams were on the
road at Yoncalla Thursday
night, with the Lady Sailors
opening the night in a tough
loss to the Eagles.
“We came out flat and they
capitalized on our weakness-
es,” said Mapleton coach
Jesika Crook. “We never
found our rhythm.”
Though Mapleton had bal-
anced scoring, with buckets
from senior Desitny Weber
and freshmen Gabrielle
Gibney, Alyssa Richards and
Alyssa West, it wasn’t
enough to outpace the
Eagles, who landed a 45-15
win.
Weber had five points and
two steals, with two points
each from Gibney, Richards
and West.
Off the boards, junior Josi
Hays had four rebounds, sen-
ior Hannah Rodet had three
and
sophomore Alexis
Gierke had two.
“We learned a lot about
where we need to improve
and continue to get better,”
said Crook.
Afterward, the boys faced
off with the Eagles, with sim-
ilar results in spite of posting
one of its highest-scoring
games of the preseason.
“Yoncalla is a high-quality
opponent,” Sailor coach Will
The coho salmon fish-
eries in Siltcoos and
Tahkenitch lakes are just
getting going. With some
recent rain and big tide
series fresh coho should be
migrating into the lakes.
Look to fish near the lake
outlet and by the major
tributaries that enter the
lakes.
Casting or trolling spin-
ners or various plugs can
be effective.
Fishing for the various
warmwater fish species is
fair to good. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity and
have both boat and bank
access.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing is
producing fair results with
a lot of fish moving to the
upper tide water reaches
and above. Trolling her-
ring, spinners or bobber
fishing can all be produc-
tive.
The wild coho fishery is
closed for the season.

loss.
Thursday, Siuslaw once again
played host, this time to the high-pres-
sure defense of Junction City.
After going scoreless and falling
behind 10-0 in the first three minutes,
senior point guard Preston Mitchell
scored on a short jumper inside, then a
pair of free throws a short time later to
close the gap to six points.
An offensive rebound from senior
guard Kenneth Thrall kept Siuslaw’s
offensive momentum going with 29
seconds left in the period. Mitchell
It’s been a busy week for the Viking
boys, with extreme weather earlier in
the week causing Tuesday’s match-up
with Newport to be moved to
Wednesday and creating back-to-back
games through Friday.
Against the Cubs Wednesday night,
Siuslaw couldn’t find its offensive
rhythm against Newport’s ability to
drop back and score from the perime-
ter. While the Vikings had a solid
effort in the paint, it wasn’t enough to
keep the Cubs from pulling away by
14 on a third-quarter run that left the
Viks trailing for the remainder of the

Viking senior Taylor Dotson brings the
ball down after a defensive rebound.
The Vikings girls spent their
week on the road, fighting extreme
weather and extreme defenses at
Newport and Junction City.
Wednesday, in a game resched-
uled from Tuesday due to weather
conditions, Siuslaw had one of its
highest-scoring games of the pre-
season, posting 36 points against
the Cubs’ high-pressure defense.
Unfortunately, the Vikings’
defense wasn’t as effective against
the hot-shooting Cubs, who won
the game going away, 67-36.
Senior point guard Sierra Potter
led scoring with eight points, fol-
lowed by fellow senior Taylor
Dotson with seven, and six points
from freshman Annabel Tupua.
Junior Abby Watkins led
rebounding with six boards for the
Viks.
Thursday, Siuslaw was back on
the road in a matchup against
Junction City.
With junior Destinie Tatum back
in the lineup, Siuslaw had an extra
spark in its offense, with Tatum
posting a double-double with 16
