We will even have a kettle in Mapleton, and anoth- er ‘floating kettle’ to be used by special arrangement.” Local retail stores Safeway, Grocery Outlet, BiMart and Fred Meyer have kettles in front of their stores now. Bell ringers started ringing on Friday. One Kettle in Old Town Florence will have a bell ringer at either The Riverside Restaurant or Old Town Barbershop. In addition, it was announced that Pop’s Smokehouse, just outside of Mapleton on Highway 126, will serve as an additional location where supporters can bring cash or checks. “We didn’t want Mapleton to be left out of this,” says local supporter “Pops” Goodman. “So we intend to have a kettle on this side of Florence and we’ll have a special promotion with our Carolina BBQ Sandwich with $1 going to The Salvation Army each and every Sunday.” The floating kettle can be scheduled by special arrange- ment to be used by churches and civic groups during the holiday season. In addition, a Salvation Army Christmas Boat Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, at Darlings Marina ARRIVE IN COURTESY PHOTO Siuslaw News sports editor and syndicated humor colum- nist Ned Hickson hands a donation to Kettle coordinator Janet Snow while kayaking on Siltcoos Lake. The bon- fire will be lit shortly there after. If it is raining, the picnic shelter will provide cover. Again this year, the Yachats Ladies Club will be providing sweet treats and there will be coffee and hot chocolate. Spontaneous drumming and singing always breaks out, so feel free to bring a percussion instrument — or bring a piece of firewood to add to the bonfire. This is a free celebration event. Any donations will be shared with the nonprofit organizations that are partici- pating. For more information, visit www.YachatsAcademy.org, www.GoYachats.com or call 541-961-6695.
