State grants available for
veterans, war memorials
The Oregon Heritage
of Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department is
offering grants for the
construction or restoration
of
veterans
and
war
memorials.
“The program is designed
to honor Oregon’s soldiers
and veterans by comm-
emorating their service to the
country,” said Kuri Gill,
coordinator for the program.
“Local governments may
apply to build or repair mon-
uments on public land.”
New monuments should
recognize veterans and wars
not already recognized.
Grants for restoration
could be used for broken
monuments, missing ele-
ments of monuments or the
related design elements of
monuments for veterans or
earlier wars, such as World
War I.
Details and the application
information are available
at
www.oregon.gov/oprd/
HCD/FINASST/Pages/grants
.aspx.
The application deadline is
Dec. 15.

Funds secured to purchase new flower baskets
The Downtown Revital-
ization Team (DRT) of the
Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce
has
secured
$15,377 in funding for its Old
Town flower basket project.
A total of 42 large, decora-
tive flower baskets will be
placed along Bay Street and
Maple Street in late April.
This is a public and private
partnership project that the
Downtown
Revitalization
Team has been working on for
well over a year.
The hope is that it will
inspire even more businesses,
both in Old Town and else-
where, to add baskets in the
future.
These baskets are from the
same supplier that was used
in the very successful pro-
gram in Old Town Reedsport
last year.
So far, 39 of the 42 baskets
have been sponsored by a
variety of individuals, busi-
nesses and the City of
Florence.
The remaining three may
be sponsored at $75 each by
contacting executive director
Cal Applebee at the Chamber
Visitor Center, 290 Highway
101 in Florence, or by email
at cal@florencechamber.com.
In addition, a significant
component in the project is a
watering and maintenance
agreement, which is funded
by the Florence Chamber.

The hanger arms
for the light poles will
be funded by the

Urban
Renewal Agency and
will also serve as ban-
ner holders for a future
project.
The DRT worked
with Public Works
director Mike Miller
to identify the poles
and several buildings
which will best serve
for this project.

Math Reads was developed
by Marilyn Burns, a well

mathematics educator.
The program uses literature
to enrich children's mathemati-
cal understanding of a multi-
tude of math concepts.
Children in grade 3 have the
opportunity to read books that
help them to understand the
concepts of fractions, place
value, money, time, multiplica-
tion, estimation, measurement,
problem solving, geometry and
more.
The books work nicely in
small groups, where children
can discuss the books and ben-

Ken Lavigne has performed
on many world stages, includ-
ing New York’s Carnegie Hall
and in England for Prince
Charles — and he will grace
the Florence Events Center
stage this Saturday, Nov. 21, at
7 p.m., in what organizers say
will be a great date night or
girl’s night out.
A few choice tickets remain.
“Ken Lavigne. He’s got the
looks. He’s got the charm.
He’s most certainly got the
voice. And now we’ve got him
for Florence,” said Sandy
Kuhlman,
SEAcoast
Entertainment
Association
board member and producer
for the concert.
“Ken is a great tenor both in
an operatic sense and in the
tradition and stylings of the
all-time great crooners,” said
Kuhlman. “He has been
labeled a charmer, a story-
teller, a humorist and an
inspiring messenger of hope.
“He enjoys Celtic favorites,
show tunes from popular
Broadway musicals, and
though he has a flair for the
operatic, no one should
pigeonhole him as just an
opera singer. He'll bring it all
to the Event Center stage.”
Lavigne will also make an
appearance for residents at
Spruce Point Assisted Living
earlier in the day on Saturday
as part of SEAcoast’s commu-
nity outreach effort.
Critics around the world
write of Lavigne, “His voice
seemed to be liquid gold, a
pure lyric sound that had sur-
prising undertones in his
unforced lower range. While it
was always excellent, there
were times when the focus was
so precise as to soothe and
excite at the same time.”
Lavigne is the second in a
seven-performance
lineup
SEAcoast is bringing to the
Florence Events Center this
season that includes: guitarist
Jesse Cook, Jan. 29; Ballet
Fantastique, Feb. 20; the
Glenn Miller Orchestra,
March 18; Shuffle (a group so
multitalented they let the
audience pick the playlist),
April 7; and gypsy-jazz artists
The New Hot Club of
America, May 13.
Tickets, artist profiles,
show times, video clips and
more information are avail-
able

Tickets can also be pur-
chased at the Florence Events
Center box office, 715 Quince
