SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2015 3 A Siuslaw students to serve Homegrown raises funds for school garden program seniors at pie social Florence-area seniors are invited to a Thanksgiving pie social on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Siuslaw High School, inside the main entrance in the “Mall” area. The KCST Viking Hour crew is hosting this event to connect the senior citizen community with high school students. Viking Hour is a stu- dent-produced and hosted weekly radio show on 106.9 KCST Monday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. “This is a chance for Siuslaw students to serve our seniors and thank them for all they have done for us,” said Claire Waggoner, the student producer of the show. “I am hoping this will become an annual event.” Grocery Outlet is helping sponsor the event. The event was once again a sell out with all 50 tickets being sold. A dessert auction was also held. Salvation Army to host ‘Kettle Kick-off’ Thursday Tomorrow, Nov. 19, begin- ning at 10 a.m., The Salvation Army will be hosting a Kettle Kick-off with Geraldine Lucio, owner of Old Town Barbershop. Mayors Rebecca Robinson Ruede of Dune City and Joe Henry of Florence will join local Sam Spayd to draw atten- tion to the opportunity to “stand at kettle” this Christmas season in Florence and help raise funds to help others through The Salvation Army. Church and civic leaders are invited to come and learn how they can be involved in this year’s Kettle Campaign. Moneys raised will benefit Western Lane County. The general public is invited to attend. Six locations in Florence will have kettles daily from Thanksgiving Day to Christmas eve, including Fred Meyer, BiMart, Grocery Outlet, Safeway and Old Town Barbershop. Volunteers generally “stand kettle” in two-hour shifts, ring a bell and greet and thank shop- pers for their generosity. Church choirs and local musicians often volunteer to provide music while their members volunteer. Blocks of time at specific locations can be arranged for civic groups. Many volunteers are needed. A free “Thank You Night Movie” at City Lights Cinemas for all volunteers and support- ers of this effort on Sunday, Dec. 27, with awards for Outstanding Kettle Volunteer and Outstanding Kettle Church/Civic Group.
