Florence police arrest Kiwanis, Elks to host free Thanksgiving dinner
California fugitives
The
Florence
Police
Department (FPD) reported
the arrest of Michele Renee
Huni, 37, and Jason Blair
Huni, 41, two transients with
warrants from Nevada County,
Calif.
According to Lt. John
Pitcher, an investigator from
the Nevada County District
Attorney’s Office contacted
the FPD on Friday, Nov. 6.
The investigator requested
assistance locating two sus-
pects that had warrants out of
Nevada County, who were
reported to be in the Florence
area.
On Tuesday, Florence
police located the suspects
camping at Honeyman State
Park.
Officers arrested the Hunis
on fugitive from justice
charges and transported them
to Lane County Jail.
Pitcher also said that the
Hunis had five children camp-
ing with them. All five chil-
dren were placed in the care of
the Department of Health
Services.

The annual Community
Thanksgiving Dinner is being
held Thanksgiving Day, Nov.
26, at the Florence Elks Lodge,
from noon to 2 p.m.
Dinner, with all the tradi-
tional Thanksgiving trimmings
is free to the public. The
Florence Kiwanis club organiz-
es this annual event and the
cost is funded by the Florence
Kiwanis Foundation.
This is the sixth annual com-
munity dinner and more than
500 dinners are served each
year. Volunteers from the local
Kiwanis club, churches and
other individuals will be on
hand to cook, serve and visit
with diners.
River Cities Taxi will once
again provide free transporta-
tion within city limits to and
from the lodge only.
Donations of cash and non-
perishable food items will be
accepted at the door.
The event requires the help
of up to 100 volunteers and we
are still seeking additional
help.

Siuslaw (PCOS). She will be
greatly missed for the impact
she has made on the lives of
churchgoers at PCOS over the
past 10 years.
Burkey
grew
up
in
Appalachia, along the Ohio
River. Her grandmother want-
ed her to play the organ, and
she privately took organ les-
sons unbeknownst to her
grandparents. One day they
attended the local Methodist
Church and heard her playing.
They were greatly impressed
and supported her desire to
continue her career as a church
organist.
Burkey knew she couldn’t
make a living as a church
musician, so she went to Ohio
State University where she
studied to become a Dental
Hygienist. This occupation
continued to be her primary
source of income for many
years allowing her to follow
her career in church music.
Studying with several well-
known organ teachers and
attending music conferences
and workshops in many parts
of the country helped refine
her skills. For 30 years she
served as the organist at First
Christian Church in Chico,
Calif., and helped that church
acquire a fine pipe organ.

While in Chico she played
during the summer months for
a small church in Chester,
Calif., in the Lake Almanor
basin. There she met her hus-
band, Jerry, a retired church
musician from Southern
California.
They played together as an
organ and piano team, and
decided to get married.
In addition to their church
work they also led community
choruses in Chico and
Florence.
When Burkey retired as a
dental hygienist she and Jerry
moved to Florence. She
accompanied the church choir
and Jerry was a hospice volun-
teer.
For a time they provided
musical
leadership
for
the Yachats Community
Presbyterian Church before
returning to work in Florence.
“I am blessed by the support
I have received through the
years in the various churches I
have served,” said Burkey.
