Sandburg defined Chicago in
his famous poem, and
Broadway extended the defini-
tion in song, dance, and laugh-
ter.
Recently, baseball fans cele-
brated the city, even though
once again its “tall bold slug-
gers” didn’t make it to the
World Series.
Nevertheless, the lure of
Chicago picked itself up, dust-
ed itself off, crept through the
fog on little cat feet, and tod-
dled West to strut itself on stage
at the Florence Events Center
this weekend and next.
“Chicago” is one of those
big, iconic musicals with pow-
erhouse singing and dancing,
and, in Sandburg’s words,
“stormy, husky, brawling, big-
shouldered”
Last
Resort
Players (LRP) Director David
Lauria brought it to Florence
with glitz, glam and grandeur.
“Chicago” is a satire on
criminal trials and the machina-
tions of the media, overturning
the balanced scales of Lady
Justice for a front-page story.
Celebrity criminals sell papers,
and the grislier the crime, the
more papers are sold.
The story is set in the
Roaring Twenties, and the
theme is as relevant today as it
was when the play opened in
1926. But, given its satirical
undercurrent, this musical noir
is a delightful romp, full of legs
and innuendo, a razzle dazzle
of song and dance, and the
Florence players prove excep-
tional to the task.
The LRP actors wore their
characters like second skins, as
though born to play the parts.
Maree Beers, known for her
ROCKS
performances
in
“Les
Miserables” and “If I Didn’t
Care, A Tribute to The
Inkspots,” lends her stunning
voice, smooth choreography,
and comic timing to Roxie, the
chorus girl accused of killing
her lover.
Matt Korso, having razzle-
dazzled local audiences in
“Cabaret” and “The 25th
Annual
Putnam
County
Spelling Bee,” does it again as
shyster lawyer Billy Flynn.
Hilarity abounds when the
press demands a story, and
Roxie plays a dummy to Billy’s
ventriloquist. Beers and Corso
have a terrific chemistry for
comedy.
Jennifer Marus delivers a
star turn in her first role as vin-
dictive Velma trying to regain
her criminal status, having
been overtaken by Roxie.

hoofer’s athleticism, and a
comic flair.
Jacob Ternyik provides stel-
lar support as Amos, Roxie’s
long-suffering, well-meaning
husband. Amos may not be the
sharpest pencil in the box, but
Ternyik’s solo song and soft
shoe dance, “Mr. Cellophane,”
is very affecting. Cellophane
was a brand new product in the
1920s!
Billy keeps calling Amos
“Andy,” mixing the names of
the characters on the popular
radio show from the twenties to
the fifties.

Crystal Farnsworth is a
hoot, spreading fulsome falset-
to fun as Mary Sunshine, the
reporter with rose-colored
glasses always looking on the
bright side.
Jason Wood, the show’s
musical director, inhabits the
role — and shoes — of Matron
“Mama” Morton, and he is
absolutely outrageous, the
queen you don’t have to be
dragged to worship! Wood is a
consummate actor and singer,
having razzle-dazzled locals in
“Cabaret,” “The Sound of
Music,” and “The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
In “Chicago” he is over the
top. You’ll want to be good to
Mama because she’s got class.
“Chicago: The Musical” is
practically non-stop with
music, singing and dancing,
and the LRP ensemble, includ-
ing the newsboys in the FEC
lobby, never miss a beat,
always on cue and in time.
The set is stylized and
evocative with the bandstand
and stairs leading to a barred
row of jail cells with plenty of
room below for action and
dancing.
This show is fortunate to be
accompanied by peerless musi-
cians that share the stage with
the actors.
The large, swinging aggre-
gation is led by soaring trum-
peter Ron Green who often
interacts with the actors. Green
is a member of Miles To Go
jazz quartet that performs live
at City Lights Cinemas if
you’ve a mind for still more
jazz.
Hats off and thumbs up to
the LRP cast and crew for, in
the words of the poet, “shovel-
ing, wrecking, planning, build-
ing, breaking and rebuilding”
this monumental musical pro-
duction of “Chicago.”
Finally,
to
paraphrase
Sandburg, you’ll never see
another show with lifted head
singing so proud to be alive,
bragging and laughing, beating
with the pulse and heart of the
people.
So foxtrot over to the FEC
this weekend and next for the
pleasure of all that jazz.
