Port prepares to lower boom on debris
Store seeks volunteers
The
Florence
Area
Humane Society (FAHS) is
seeking volunteers to work in
the FAHS Christmas Store
through November.
Anyone interested in vol-
unteering a few hours a week
should stop by the Christmas
Store during business hours
and ask for Elaine, or call
Lynda at 541-997-4457 after
5 p.m.
The Christmas Store is
open daily at its new location,
2520 Highway 101, at 25th
Street, between Taco Bell and
Mini Pet Mart.
The store is open through
Nov. 29, but is closed
Thanksgiving Day.
Store hours are Monday
through Saturday, 10 a.m. to
4 p.m., and Sundays from
noon to 4 p.m.
All proceeds benefit the
Florence Area
Humane
Society, feeding and caring
for dogs and cats each wait-
ing for their own forever
home.
To prepare for the winter
storm season the Port of
Siuslaw will begin placing
protective log booms around
its marinas. Booms will be
placed around the East and
West boat basins, and the boat
launch located at the end of
Harbor Street, the middle of
November.
Increasing debris flow in
the Siuslaw River over recent
years requires the Port to take
these protective measures.
Debris trapped in the basins
can damage docks and moored
vessels, as well as hinder boat
launches. The log booms are
placed around the marinas to
reduce the amount of debris
that enters the basins.
Port staff still expend many
hours per week removing
floating debris that enters the
basins in spite of the boom
logs, or from when the booms
are left open.
Boaters are advised to use
care when operating around
the log booms, and should not
attempt to move the booms
during strong winds or rough
water conditions. Boaters are
responsible for securely
replacing the log booms after
their boat enters or exits the
marina or launch ramp area.
The port is investigating the
purchase of new, lighter-
weight and easier to handle
debris booms, but until those
can be acquired, boat opera-
tors should give careful con-
sideration to the current and
river
conditions
before
attempting to move the log
booms.
Chains and shackles secure
the booms, but handling lines
are attached to each boom for
ease of opening and closing
the boom.
Instructions are posted at
the docks for moving and
securing the booms and port
staff are available to answer
questions or provide assis-
tance.

pedestrian
safety
Rotary Student of the Quarter (SMS)
“Oregonians Crossing”
campaign aims to increase
awareness of Oregon traffic
laws, promote safe and
responsible travel behavior
and ultimately reduce the
number of people hit or
killed by vehicles.
Included in the campaign
is the Pedestrian Safety
Program with a mission to
reduce pedestrian injuries
and fatalities and to facili-
tate walking to improve
health and fitness.
Other safety tips offered
for
pedestrians
and
motorists in the brochures
and videos include warn-
ings against darting into
traffic, making eye contact
with the driver, treating
every intersection as a
crosswalk and “phone off/
eyes up” safety measures.

SOS receives $100,000 donation

Siuslaw Outreach Services
(SOS) has received a dona-
tion of $100,000 from John
and Patricia Hardison.
The funds are designated
for the SOS endowment fund
to provide for victims of
domestic violence. The funds
will be invested in the name
of the John and Patricia
Hardison Charitable Fund,
and only the proceeds will be
used.
The Hardisons expressed a
desire that their donation
would encourage others to
also contribute, and also that
they really love Florence and
hope their efforts are benefi-
cial, said SOS executive
director David Wiegan.
“This is truly an extraordi-
nary gift for SOS, and we will
ensure that the funds are used
appropriately,” said Wiegan.
“With the ongoing volatility
affecting a number of our
funding sources, we are very
concerned with building up
our endowment fund so that
we can weather the inevitable
ups and downs in resources
that nonprofits typically face.
“So many of the domestic
violence victims we serve
have needs for relocation
costs, emergency shelter, set-
ting up a new place to live,
and many other expenses.
This fund will help provide
for these kinds of needs in
perpetuity.”
