Fire marshal urges testing of smoke alarms with clock setback
come equipped with a hush
feature and a 10-year battery.
Because of this technology,
the national slogan “Change
your clock, Change your bat-
tery” may not apply to Oregon
residents who have these ion-
ization-only smoke alarms.
Other types of alarms are
also being sold with either a
10-year battery or a standard-
life battery.
“Ensuring you have work-
ing smoke alarms in your
home is the single most
important step you can take to
increase your family’s safety
from a home fire,” adds
Walker. “Also, be sure to
replace any smoke alarm that
is 10 years old or older.”
To test your alarm properly
we recommend you:
1) Push the test button to be
sure the battery is working.
2) When replacing batter-
ies, follow the manufacturer’s
instructions for the correct
battery type to use.
3) Always retest alarms
after installing new batteries.
4) Replace any alarm that
fails to operate after installing
a new battery.
5) Inspect your alarms to
determine if they are 10 years
old or older, and replace any
smoke alarm 10 years old or
older. Look for a date on the
back of the alarm. If there is
no date, your alarm is more
than 10 years old and should
LIHEAP anticipates release of funds
The federal office of Health
and Human Services has
released funding to the states
for this winter’s Low Income
Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP).
LIHEAP helps income-
qualified households with
their home energy bills in the
winter.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 2,
nonprofit and senior agencies
that administer the program
throughout Lane County will
begin placing households on
LIHEAP appointment waiting
lists.
Interested households may
place themselves on a waiting
list by calling one of the agen-
cies that operate the program.
Lane County has not
received its LIHEAP alloca-
tion yet from the State, but is
anticipating a similar LIHEAP
funding level as last year.
If a household doesn’t get
on the LIHEAP waiting list in
early November, the house-
hold should try again the first
working day of the next month
during the winter and spring
heating season.
LIHEAP agencies do re-
open their lists at least once
each year.
To qualify for LIHEAP, a
household’s current gross
monthly income must be at or
below 60 percent of Oregon’s
median income level. A
household of one person can
have a gross monthly income
as high as $1,827 and qualify.
A household of four people
can have a gross monthly
income of $3,514 and qualify.
The amount of assistance a
household receives depends
on a number of factors.
The program pays the assis-
tance directly into a house-
hold’s utility account as a one-
time payment that can range
from $150-$550.
Interested households may
call one of the agencies listed
below to be placed on a wait-
ing list.
Senior citizens, ages 60 and
older, contact Florence Senior
Connections at 541-902-9430,
ext. 7835.

a senior citizen, and house-
holds with a disabled person,

for Oregonians to test their
smoke alarms.
The office of State Fire
Marshal urges residents to test
their smoke alarms before
automatically changing the
batteries.
:Smoke alarm technology
has advanced and many now
come with 10-year batteries
and some are tamper-resist-
ant,” said State Fire Marshal
Jim Walker. “So, I encourage
residents to test their alarms
before changing the battery.”
Oregon law requires ioniza-
tion-only smoke alarms that
are solely battery powered to
