The Vikings volleyball
team will host the Cottage
Grove Lions at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 27, in a state
4A play-in match at Glenn
Butler Court.
It will be the second meet-
ing of the season between the
schools. Cottage Grove beat
Siuslaw on Sept. 26 at
Hidden Valley High School
in Grants Pass, 3-1 (25-13,
19-25, 25-19, 25-18).
That meeting was at the
end of a long week that saw
the Vikings play league road
matches at Myrtle Point
(South
Umpqua)
and
Winston (Douglas).
Siuslaw had three long
road trips in five days, and
also
was
shorthanded
because of injuries.
The Vikings (11-8) are the
Far West League’s No. 2
team, rated No. 14 among 4A
schools by the Oregon
School Activities
Association.
The Lions (8-12) are the
Sky-Em League’s No. 3
team, rated No. 18 by the

“T
here’s no state without
district, everything else
is
just
practice,”
Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said
after Thursday’s Far West League
district meet. “This is where you
have to make it all happen.”
For the Viking girls, what “hap-
pened” was the school’s 13th con-
secutive league title — an achieve-
ment that two-time district winner
and Viking junior Celie Mans called
“Super cool to be a part of in
Siuslaw history, and something that
never gets old.”
Mans finished the race a full 42
seconds ahead of Marshfield fresh-
man Jazmin Chavez (19:18), and
more than 30 seconds better than last
year’s district-title winning time.
“I’m feeling way stronger this
year,” said Mans, who spent last sea-
son plagued with injury and off pace
for a state title — a prospect that she
plans to pursue this year with post
haste.
“There’s definitely going to be
competition, but I’m going to give it
my best shot,” said Mans.
Also pacing Siuslaw on Thursday
was junior transfer Morgan
Bingham who has come onto the
scene and had an immediate impact.
At district, Bingham ran a personal
best time of 19:30, placing third
overall, with senior Sierra Potter
also running a PR in 20:25 for fifth.

section and conditions.
Bank fishing near the
Hwy. 101 bridge or up at
the newly opened Don
Lindly Park (MP 7 on
Hwy. 34) can be good for
both Chinook and coho.
Cutthroat trout fishing is
fair in the lower mainstem
below the confluence with
Five Rivers.
With the low and warm
river conditions the best
opportunities will be in the
early morning when water
temperatures are the
coolest. Small spinners are
typically productive as
wells as small spoons or
fly fishing with nymphs or
streamers.

In game two, the Sailors fell

again.
But in game three, the momen-
tum began to change.
“We really focused on where we
wanted to be instead of where we
