things well in-hand for their
Homecoming game against
Douglas.
Fueled by senior power on a
night that could likely be the final
appearance for 11 Vikings on the
grass at Hans Petersen Field,
Siuslaw took a 14-0 lead by the
end of the first quarter, with sen-
ior quarterback Preston Mitchell
scoring on a 1-yard sneak and a
42-yard keeper.
Meanwhile, Siuslaw’s defense
held Douglas scoreless for nearly
all of the second quarter as well.
Viking senior Scott Gordon
added an exclamation point when
he snatched up an interception
within the red zone and returned
it for a 90-yard touchdown —
and a 21-0 Siuslaw lead.
The Trojans’ best performance
of the game came in the final
minute of the half, stringing
together a six-play, 55-yard drive
to score and avoid being blanked-
out heading into halftime, 7-21.
Senior running back Kenneth
Thrall got the third quarter started
5 B
by spearheading an 11-play, 75-
yard march up the field that
ended with Thrall breaching the
end zone on a 2-yard carry to
score.
After holding Douglas score-
less for the period, the Vikings
extended their lead on the first
play of the fourth quarter when
Mitchell raced 56 yards for a TD
— and 35-7 lead after Thrall’s
fifth kick of the evening; Thrall
eventually found the uprights six
times before the final horn.
Douglas was able to answer on
its next possession, finding the
end zone on a 2-yard carry by
junior runningback Matt Gibson.
Siuslaw responded, bringing
the ball to within nine yards of the
goal line on five plays. From
there, Thrall rolled in for a 42-14
lead after a PAT.
Though the Trojans were able
to score quickly on an impressive
64-yard pass from junior quarter-
back Carter Dahl to senior receiv-
er John Wanamaker to make it
42-20, an onside kick attempt
ended up with Siuslaw.
Moving into the quarterback
slot, sophomore Trent Reavis was

able to run the clock out with
blocking from junior running-
back Nick Steinman for the win.
That same night, Marshfield
(3-0) sank South Umpqua 50-6,
and North Bend (4-0) lowered the
boom on Brookings-Harbor, 47-7
to remain undefeated and at the
top of the league at 4-0.
The Pirates and Bulldogs will
meet up Friday to determine who
gets the league crown and the No.
1 seed heading into state.
Assuming the Viks beat
Brookings (1-3) Friday, they
would finish the regular season at
3-2 and in third place — most
likely against Stayton.
While the most likely scenario
has the Vikings on the road for
that play-in game, a slim chance
remains for a home game should
the rankings play out in their
favor.
In the meantime, kickoff for
Friday’s game at Brookings-
Harbor is 7 p.m.
