musical evening tonight
Saturday, Oct. 17, starting at
6:15 p.m., all are invited to
attend a Starlight Cabaret
Dinner and concert at the
Florence Unitarian Universal-
ist Fellowship Hall.
Jeff Lovejoy will bring his
bass, keyboard and vocals to
share an entertaining mix of
’60s and ’70s laid-back songs,
from the Eagles to Clapton,
Dylan to Lightfoot and Seeger
to Sting, with a few recent
tunes thrown into the mix as
well.
Dinner will be served at
6:30 p.m. and the concert will
begin at 7 p.m.
Lovejoy has sung and
played bass and keyboards in
bands, duos and trios for more

in
Massachusetts, Maine and
Colorado.

After being stranded in Florence since March undergoing repairs due to a dismasting accident off the
Oregon coast, the 58-foot catamaran “Twin Image” resumes its trip to Huahine, Tahiti. According to boat
skipper Laurent Patereau, the vessel may need to make additional repairs in San Francisco before contin-
uing the more than 4,000-mile voyage.

Oct. 24, at Southwestern
Oregon Community College’s
Hales Center.

al Veterans Day publication, which is a special supplement to the news-
paper that is devoted to all military veterans who currently are Florence-
area residents or have a connection to this area.

the annual tribute publication, or in updating information that we have pub-

about Oregon’s marine envi-
ronment.
Oregon Sea Grant is a
coastal science, outreach and
education program based at
Oregon State University.
Registration in advance is
recommended as space is lim-
ited.
Registration, which is $35
for the general public and $25
for students, includes lunch, a
reception and refreshments.
Doors open at 8 a.m. and
the conference begins at 9
a.m.

conference
will
explore several marine-relat-
ed issues, including changing
ocean conditions such as
“The Blob” — a huge patch
of unusually warm water in
the Pacific Ocean; innova-
tions
in
fishing;
new
approaches to ocean conser-
vation; marine debris; water
quality; a potential Cascadia
Subduction Zone earthquake
and others.
The
conference
will
include talks, displays and
hands-on activities.
Keynote speaker Wallace J.
Nichols, author of the book,
“Blue Mind: the Surprising
Science that Shows How
Being Near, In, On or Under
Water Can Make You
Happier, Healthier, More
Connected and Better at What
You Do,” will discuss some of
the themes in his book.
His talk will weave in neu-
roscience, psychology, biolo-
gy and ecosystem analysis, as
well as personal stories.
