The Broncos are 5-0 but all Denver fans think Peyton Manning is a bad quarterback. “His numbers are slipping,” they cry, but for the past three seasons he has been 19-1 through five starts. In South Carolina, Manning’s old nemesis, the ball coach named Steve Spurrier, has resigned. Faced with his first losing season since he coached the professional football team from Washington, Spurrier just decides to bail. It’s not something that should have taken anyone by surprise. Spurrier has been slipping of late. What kind of coach tells people during the off-season that he plans on coaching anoth- er “two to three years?” The kind of coach who isn’t interested in his recruits, that’s who. Who would want to play for Spurrier when by their senior or junior year he’s off to go fishing? The ones who got suckered into see- ing him leave them as a freshman, that’s who. Playboy will stop featur- ing pictures of fully nude women. A woman gets sassy with Donald Trump, complain- ing that she expects to be paid a fair wage for doing the same work a man gets paid for. Turns out she’s an UNPAID intern for Jeb Bush. Jennifer Lawrence announced that she doesn’t want to be likable, while Both men and women were on the course for the 20th annual Run for the Brownies, organized by retired Myrtle Point coach and current Siuslaw track throws coach Pat Towne and held at Sandpines Golf Links on Thursday. It’s a 3,000-meter race that isn’t meant to be as intense as other races throughout the season, particularly with district competition coming up next week. Even so, Siuslaw’s boys team claimed five of the top six placements, beginning with freshman Murray Bingham, who was the only runner to finish in less than 10 minutes with his time of 9:53.39 for first place. Though Zach Lathram of Coquille was second (10:09.60), Siuslaw swept the next four finishes to place first See SIUSLAW 3B NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR MID COAST LAKES: Fishing for the various warm water fish species is fair to good during the summer months. Thanks to a decisive three-game sweep Thursday night at North Bend, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22, the Vikings fin- ished the regular season tied for second with South Umpqua at 6-4. But since the Vikings swept the Lancers twice during the regular season, the Far West’s No. 2 seed will go to Siuslaw. In addition to launching them into the postseason on the heels of a solid win, it also qualifies the Vikings for a home match to begin the first round of state playoffs on Oct. 31. That means Siuslaw’s seniors will FWL stand before a home crowd one more time in pursuit of a win. Earlier in the week, it looked as though a senior night win was in the air as the Vikings stormed off to a 25-15, 25-18 advantage in the first two sets against Douglas. But the Trojans man- aged a reversal of fortune, digging in and winning the next two sets, 25-22, 25-20, to tie the match and force a fifth set. See VIKS 3B N. D OUGLAS 7 P .
