W OLVERINES , 68-24 last Friday, but once the Sailors shifted into high gear there was no stopping them. With 603 yards of total offense, including 464 on the ground, Mapleton was a dominant force that had secured a 50-8 lead by halftime. “Once we settled in, we jumped on the ball and created lots of opportuni- ties,” said Greene. Six of those opportunities came off of forced turnovers as a result of the Sailors’ high-pressure defense led by junior linebacker Tyler Packebush, who had four tackles, a sack for a loss and a 13-yard interception return. Mapleton’s defense was also shored up by Hunter Simington with 11 tackles, five assists and a fumble recovery, sen- ior lineman Trevver D’Auteuil with seven tackles and three assists, and See SAILORS 3C On the Bite A WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS MID COAST LAKES: Siuslaw enters final stretch of league season B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw senior pitcher Brad Snow threw a 2-hitter in Tuesday’s win on the road at Douglas. Siuslaw’s only Far West rival in the race, North Bend, was 13th in a field of 14 teams. Trailing by 14 entering the second quarter, it’s a safe bet no one would’ve guessed the Vikings would find them- selves facing double overtime against the Pirates last Friday against one of the 4A’s top-ranked teams. But thanks to an extraordinary defensive effort against a normally high-scoring Pirates team, the Vikings not only stopped the bleeding — they began the healing process while bat- tling their way back into the game. Siuslaw went on to hold Marshfield scoreless for the next three quarters. In the meantime, the Vikings cut the Pirates lead to a single touchdown after completing a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended on a 21-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Preston Mitchell. Though Marshfield threatened twice in the third period to reach the end zone, Siuslaw managed a pair of cru- cial stops within 30 yards of their own end zone to take over on downs.
