SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 Governor proclaims October as Fire Prevention Month Friends of library seek new members Become a new member of Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library (FOL) during October through the end of December and you will have a one-in-25 chance to win a prize. Each person whose name is drawn will be awarded a free pass to City Lights Cinemas in Florence. Annual membership dues help the FOL financially sup- port the Florence and Mapleton libraries. The Friends strive to enhance the standard of excel- lence of these libraries by funding programs and services beyond what is allocated in the library’s operating budget. 5 B In support of the theme of National Fire Prevention Week, and at the request of the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office (OSFM), Gov. Kate Brown has pro- claimed October as Oregon Fire Prevention Month. Oregon’s theme mirrors the national theme — “Hear the beep where you sleep.” Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm. “Responsibility for fire safety begins at home,” said State Fire Marshal Jim Walker. “All adults should ensure they have working smoke alarms on every level of their home, inside each bedroom and outside any sleeping area.” Membership applications can be found at the library front desk or on the Friends’ Book Sale shelf to the left of the library entrance door. To learn more about the FOL, join us for the 2015 Friends of the Library Day on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the library in Florence. Cookies, punch and infor- mation will be provided. The Friends Board of Directors will meet next on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., in the Bromley Room. This is another opportunity for interested parties to attend and learn more about the Friends of the Library. During October, OSFM, the American Red Cross, Bi-Mart, the Oregon Food Bank and fire agencies statewide are teaming up to raise awareness of the impor- tance of having working smoke alarms in the areas where you sleep. Most fire fatalities happen between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. when most people are asleep. The OSFM’s partnership with the Oregon Food Bank includes 10,000 smoke alarm education fliers to be placed in food boxes statewide. The Bi-Mart Corporation will distribute 6,000 smoke alarm fliers to customers who shop at any of their 60 Oregon stores. Additionally, Bi-Mart in- store ad center screens and their social media channels will share OSFM smoke alarm messaging. Working smoke alarms pro- vide an early warning to fire, allowing individuals and fam- ilies vital minutes to escape, and increasing chances of sur- viving. Additional fire safety tips: • For increased protection, have working smoke alarms on every level of your home (including the basement), in each bedroom and outside any sleeping area. • Smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older should be replaced. • Follow the manufactur- er’s recommendation for the type of battery to use in your smoke alarm. • Smoke alarms with a non- replaceable (long-life) battery are designed to be effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, imme- diately replace the entire smoke alarm. • Never disconnect or remove batteries from smoke alarms for other uses. • Smoke alarms are avail- able for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. For a free smoke alarm check and installation, contact the American Red Cross at preparedness@ redcross.org or 503-528- 5783.
