The Sailors got a chance to feel their
own turf for the first time this season
on Friday, hosting Falls City for a
chance to claim their second league
win.
Mapleton was the first to light the
scoreboard when junior runningback
AJ Foster capped off a nine-play drive
into the end zone. The conversion was
denied, but the Sailors took a 6-0 lead
less than five minutes into the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, the
Mountaineers were stopped on their
own 34-yard line by junior Hunter
Simington, who had 13 tackles on the
night. At fourth-and-15, Falls City
made the unlikely choice to go for the
first down, instead managing to score
on a 63-yard run and making good on
the conversion to take the lead, 8-6.
Falls City scored again a short time
later but was denied the conversion by
Chet Geddes and Tyler Packebush, who
held the Mountaineers to a 14-6 lead
with 2:20 remaining in the quarter.
Just 15 second later, Packebush
found an opening in the Falls City’s
defense and scrambled 57 yards for a
touchdown. The conversion was
denied, but Mapleton was within two
points, 12-14.
After forcing the Mountaineers to
punt away their next possession,
Mapleton was able to reach Falls City’s
