W
hile much of the state reeled with the news of
last Thursday’s mass shooting at Umpqua
Community College (UCC) in Roseburg, Dr.
Robyn Wallace-Blanchard assembled a team to assist in
the crisis — starting with her two therapy dogs.
Wallace-Blanchard, or “Dr. Robyn” as students call her,
is a member of the Lane Education Service District (ESD)
that allows her to be a school psychologist for Siuslaw
and Mapleton school districts. Her two dogs, Shakti and
Brillo, are therapy dogs that interact with students.
“The dogs were there in the grief rooms at UCC. I just
wanted the students to know what a comfort the dogs they
see at their schools were to those who really needed a dog
to pet,” Wallace-Blanchard said.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the students, staff, fac-
ulty and other community members could not return to
campus to gather belongings.
