They need food and water and a house to live in, and they need love. Things like that. Appropriately, the evening began with a moment of silence for the vic- tims of the Roseburg shootings, fol- lowed by Siuslaw’s Hannah Bartlett and Claire Waggoner singing the national anthem before an emotional and appreciative crowd. In the spirit of FWL sportsmanship, the teams’ initial greet- ing prior to introductions was especial- ly enthusiastic as players and fans looked forward to a chance to forget about the day’s events and settle into a much-needed diversion of spirited competition. Low Tide Oct. 3 05:03am / 6.2 10:37am / 2.5 4:36am / 7.3 11:36pm / 0.1 Oct. 3 AT FISHING 3B Tatum takes helm of Lady Viks basketball Clint Tatum has been promoted from assistant coach to head coach of the girls basketball program at Siuslaw High School. “Coach Tatum is an excellent addi- tion to our program, and he has all the tools to build a successful program,” said Siuslaw High School athletic director Jeromy Graybill. “He already was working with most of the girls over the summer, and he has built a good & SHEET METAL, INC. rapport with them.” Tatum, 40, who owns his own con- struction company in Florence, has been an assistant coach with the Vikings for three years. He has coached youth-level teams in the Oregon com- munities of Lebanon and Jefferson. Tatum also ran the Siuslaw Basketball Camp and coached the girls summer league team. “I was asked by members of the bas- ketball team to apply (for the job), so I did,” Tatum said. “There’s a lot of tal- ent there.” One of those players would be his daughter, Destinie, a junior, who cur- rently is running cross country. Tatum held a meeting with players this past Thursday at the school, with official practices beginning Nov. 16.
