March for Domestic Violence
Awareness this Sunday
This year’s Domestic
Violence Awareness March,
hosted by Siuslaw Outreach
Services (SOS), will be held
Sunday, Sept. 27, beginning at
12:45 p.m., at Veteran’s
Memorial Park, at the west
end of Bay Street.
The march begins at 1 p.m.
Participants will march to
the boardwalk, which takes
approximately 10 minutes.
The purpose of the march is
to bring awareness of this
important issue.
In 2014, SOS provided
advocacy services to 170 sur-
vivors of domestic violence in
Florence.
Once again, members of
the Siuslaw High School
cheerleading squad and foot-
ball team will join the march,
along with a police escort.
“We would love to have as
many supporters as possible,”
said David Wiegan, executive
director of SOS. “Each year
we have victims come forward
afterward to seek advocacy
services because of the
march.”

FOL book sale nets nearly $3,000 for library
The new Labor Day Book
Sale, sponsored by the
Friends of the Library (FOL),
raised just short of $3,000
from the sale of used books
donated by FOL members and
others over the year.
Sales included both fiction
and nonfiction books. Adding
a third day for sales of a plas-
tic grocery bag full of books
for $2 added to the event and
helped receipts reach a level
not seen in several years.
FOL member Marilyn
Wetstein organized the book
sale and was assisted by a
team of dedicated volunteers.
Money raised through book
sales and other events are pro-
vided to the Siuslaw Library
for a number of purposes.

Learn how county performance audits work
Lane County’s recently
appointed performance audi-
tor, Shanda Miller, wants to
ensure the public understands
what her office does and how
its actions will affect day-to-
day operations of county gov-
ernment and why this impor-
tant to Lane County citizens.
Miller and Lane County
commissioners will host a
“Meet the Auditor” informa-
tion session at five locations
within Lane County, includ-
ing Florence at the Siuslaw
Public Library, 1460 Ninth
St, on Thursday, Oct. 1, from
3 to 4:30 p.m., and 6 to 7:30
p.m.
Miller will share informa-
tion with the public on how
and why her office conducts
performance audits and how
audit results will affect resi-
dents and influence County
business.
The information session
will also provide opportuni-
ties for the public to ask
questions about the audit
process and get to know more
about Miller’s role, back-
ground and goals for her
department.
The County Performance
Auditor’s Office assists
the
County
Board
of
Commissioners in improving
the performance, accounta-
bility, and transparency of
Lane County government.
The Board appointed
Miller as the performance
auditor in February 2015.
Hwy 101 paving begins evening work near
Florence until Oct. 31
Looking Back
A two-year paving and curve
widening project on Highway
101, north of Florence, will be
working nights and weekends
now to meet an Oct. 31 con-
tract deadline.
The paving will take place
between mileposts 179 and
184, north of Florence.
Travelers should expect a
single lane of travel through
the construction zone, with
delays no longer than 20 min-
utes. Travel will be controlled
by flaggers or a pilot car.
This is the southern
segment of a longer project
that will be completed by
WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
August 2016.
The Cook’s Chasm to Sutton
Creek project, which covers a
17-mile segment of Highway
101 in Lane County (MP 167-
184), will replace failing pave-
ment and construct safety
improvements that will benefit
bicyclists, pedestrians and
motorists.
Several curves have been
identified as needing safety
enhancements to reduce large
vehicle off-tracking outside of
the travel lane. The curves will
be widened to enhance safety
for motorists, pedestrians, and
bicyclists.
Center line rumble strips
will be installed throughout the
project to reduce the chance of
cross over accidents. Center
line rumble strips have proven
effective in reducing cross over
crashes.
In 2016, the contractor will
construct the northern segment
between MP 167.23 and
177.83. The entire project is
scheduled for completion in
late summer, 2016.
