OBITUARIES
DITZHAZY—Frederick
M. Ditzhazy, 84, died May 27,
2015,
in
Tigard, Ore.
Fred was
born
to
Joseph and
M a r y
Ditzhazy
Aug.
26,
1931,
in
Fred Ditzhazy Garden City,
Mich., and
along with his twin brother
Frank, was the youngest of a
large family.
As a young man, Fred spent
four years in Europe in the mil-
itary, played baseball with the
Baltimore Orioles and became
an Arthur Murray Ballroom
Dance instructor.
In 1958, as Fred was coach-
ing at a summer camp in Ocala,
Fla., he met Doreen Gilday,
who was teaching ballet classes
at the same camp and reported-
ly sparks flew. After camp
ended, Fred and Doreen head-
ed to Eugene, Ore., to take over
a dance studio which they grew
into the Eugene School of
Ballet.
Fred taught ballroom dance,
performed in the ballet school’s
regional ballet company and
assisted Doreen in teaching
partnering classes.
In 1978, Fred and Doreen
sold the school to their students
Riley Graham and Tony
Pimble and retired to the ocean
they both loved near Florence.
Fred sold real estate and
continued to teach ballroom
dance at the Florence branch of
Lane Community College,
where Doreen also taught adult
ballet classes.
Through dance, Fred and
Doreen touched the lives of the
countless students who came
through their classes.
They left a legacy of profes-
sional dancers who continue to
dance and teach additional gen-
erations of dancers in Florence,
Eugene, Bend, Portland and
around the world, including
Canada and Denmark.
Dancers step lightly through
this world but touch many of us
as they pass.
