6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2015 Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Spark By John Twelve Hawks Book review by Kevin Mittge Spark features a most unusual character. A man named Jacob Underwood, following a motor- cycle accident, suffers from Cotard’s syndrome, a real condi- tion in which a patient believes he is dead. Underwood is a con- tracted hit man for the Special Services Section of a large inter- national bank. He solves prob- lems, mostly through assassina- tions. Believing he is dead, that there is just a “spark” within the “shell” of his body, Underwood feels only three emotions: bore- dom, curiosity and disgust. This has made him the per- fect, unemotional “enforcer” of secret bank actions. The story takes place in a future not far away. An interna- tional terrorist event several years before has resulted in unprecedented surveillance and a security state in the U.S. as well as all countries across the globe. The bank Underwood works for can tap into this gov- ernment network of surveillance. One day a young bank employee, Emily Buchanan, fails to show up for work and disappears without a trace. The bank is afraid she pos- sesses confidential information and contracts with Underwood to track her down and “make a successful presentation to the customer” — code words for assassination. As Underwood traces the elu- sive bank employee, with flash- backs to his accident and psy- chological condition, he begins to think outside of his unemo- tional box and maybe, just maybe, begins to develop a rela- tionship with the missing banker. This is a fast moving, well written, dystopic thriller about the near-future. John Twelve Hawks is the pseudonym for an American author, who’s real identity is unknown. He has written the Fourth Realm trilogy consisting of The Traveler, The Dark River and The Golden City, and has written about the growing sur- veillance state in a nonfiction e- book, Against Authority. Genealogy Society to learn about Internet research Tonight at 7 in the Bromley Room, the Siuslaw Genealogical Society, a library sponsored group, will feature genealogist Kim Davis of North Bend, speaking on “Beginning Your Internet Research: A Pattern for Research.” Today, when people decide to start researching their family his- tory, most turn immediately to the Internet. You can begin with a scattershot approach through all the available websites with valid or invalid genealogical information, or you can plan your research in such a way as to make best use of your time and to build your family tree accu- rately and methodically. Davis, a third generation genealogist, has been research- ing family history for more than 30 years. Pulled reluctantly into Internet usage, she now enjoys the challenges and opportunities of Internet research. This pro- gram is free and open to the gen- eral public. Lego Club to meet Join children’s librarian Gayle Weiss in the Bromley Room from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, for engineering fun with Legos. Kids from grades 2 through 6 are invited to create, build and display their creations. View previous club creations made from the internationally popular building block in the display case in the children’s area of the library. March for Domestic Violence Awareness This year’s Domestic Violence Awareness March, hosted by Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS), will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, beginning at 12:45 p.m., at Veteran’s Memorial Park, at the west end of Bay Street. The march begins at 1 p.m. Participants will march to the boardwalk, which takes approximately 10 minutes. The purpose of the march is to bring awareness of this important issue, and that it is present in all communities and social circles; raising awareness is a critical component in dealing with the problem. In 2014, SOS provided advocacy services to 170 sur- vivors of domestic violence in Florence. Last year’s march included more than 100 participants. Once again, members of the Siuslaw High School cheer- leading squad and football team will join the march, along with a police escort. “We would love to have as many supporters as possible,” said David Wiegan, executive director of SOS. “It is a seri- ous but positive experience, and each year we have vic- tims come forward afterward to seek advocacy services because of the march.” Call for details. Expires 11/1/2015. L OOKING FOR B REAKING N EWS ? www.TheSiuslawNews.com IRUPHUO\3UXGHQWLDO3DFL¿F3URSHUWLHV Same great brokers... same excellent service. What’s happening where you live?
