When junior runningback Cade
Clawson scampered into the end zone
late in the fourth quarter for his first
varsity touchdown, it capped an
evening of football that was a mixture
of excited fandom as well as some
silent reflection.
Held on 9-11, Friday’s game began
with a moment of silence as a nearly
packed stadium reflected on what hap-
pened that day 14 years ago, as well as
the liberties we enjoy as Americans —
including Friday night football at high
schools around the nation.
Following that reverent moment,
there was another kind of silence as
Viking fans watched Pleasant Hill drive
its way into the end zone for a quick 6-
0 lead less than two minutes into the
game.
It was the last time there would be
any kind of silence in the game.

The Sailors opened their football season with a solid
road win, taking on South Wasco County last Friday and
dominating the Redsides for a 36-14 nonleague win.
“When you only have 12 kids for an eight-man team,
everyone has to do their job,” said Mapleton coach Jeff
Greene. “Everyone worked hard and did what they

After getting a taste of Far West competition last
week, Siuslaw took things up a notch over the weekend
during the Ash Creek Cross Country Festival in
Monmouth, where the Viks faced off with some of the
region’s top runners in several divisions.
Once again, junior harrier Celie Mans was Siuslaw’s
top points-maker, finishing 11th individually with

RIVER:
Cutthroat trout
The cutthroat trout fish-
ery is slow to fair. Fishing
during the early mornings
or in the larger tributaries is
the most productive. River
conditions are very low and
warm for this time of year.
Bait is not allowed above
the head of tide but small
spinners, spoons and fly
fishing can be very produc-
tive.
ALSEA RIVER : cutthroat
trout
The cutthroat trout fish-
ery is fair in the mainstem
and in some of the large
tributaries. With the low
and warm river conditions
the best opportunities will
be in the early morning
when water temperatures
are the coolest. Small spin-
ners are typically produc-
tive as wells as small
spoons or fly fishing with
nymphs or streamers.
SILETZ
RIVER:
Steelhead, cutthroat trout
Summer steelhead fish-
ing is fair in the upper river.
Low flows and warming
river temperatures are mak-
ing new fish race up into
the cooler holding waters of
the gorge area. New fish
will continually be moving
into the river through the
summer and early fall.
River flows are much lower
than normal for this time of
year so think small and sub-
tle presentations.
Typical steelhead tactics
apply such as bobber and
jig / bait, or casting spoons
or spinners. Cutthroat trout
are now also open to har-
vest and can be found
throughout the main stem
river and many large tribu-
taries.
WILSON
RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook, cut-
throat
Summer steelhead fish-
ing is slow. Fishing for cut-
throat trout should be fair.
Use lighter gear for best
results as the water is
extremely low and clear.
Spring Chinook fishing is
closed. All angling is closed
after 2 p.m. above tidewater
until further notice.
