For the next five to six months, the small ODOT parking lot next to the river under the bridge will be closed and there will be some one-lane closures intermit- tently — but businesses on Bay Street will suffer only minor inconvenience. Evan Stuart, a project man- ager for Hamilton Construction Co., the general contractor on the project, said, “We should be in and out of Bay Street by the beginning of spring.” He assured the audience at the Sept. 9 bridge open house that crews and equipment will not block access to any busi- City manager ‘outstanding,’ says council ness or park on Bay Street and that they will maintain pedes- trian access. “The impact to the city will be tough at first, because we’re starting in the north end,” ODOT spokesman Rick Little said. “But that impact decreases as we move across the river.” According to their timeline, crews should be out of Bay Street by the Rhododendron Festival in May. “We won’t be there during your next summer tourism season, as we’ll be across the river,” Little said. Hamilton crews will begin at the north end of the bridge, working on dry land until they move to a barge in the river. Then they will create a con- tainment structure that hangs from the bridge. The structure will not only protect workers as they repair and reconstruct the bridge, but also muffle the sound of con- struction and equipment.
