2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2015 Local police issue warning about unmarked vehicles 50th ANNIVERSARY Kay and Larry Bacon Kay and Larry Bacon of Florence celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Washington’s San Juan islands, where they honey- mooned 50 summers ago. The trip included several days of sailing among the islands, followed by a week’s sojourn in a cliffside house overlooking the water on Lopez Island, where the couple spent their honeymoon. The Bacons were married in Pocatello, Idaho, on July 9, 1965, and moved from there to Florence in 1970, when Larry took a job as the coastal reporter for The Register- Guard. Previously he was the city editor for the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello. The couple still resides in the same house they moved into when they arrived in Florence. Larry retired from The Reg- ister Guard in 2002. He also served in the U.S. armed f o r c e s reserves. He spent six years of service in the National Guard and 20 years in the Navy Reserve. Kay, also re- tired, worked 11 years as plan- ning secretary for Dunes City, and 13 years as manager of the Florence office of Edward Jones Investments. Kay and Larry met in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she was a school district secretary and he was a cub re- porter for the Idaho Falls Post-Register. Later, they both moved to Pocatello, where she attended Idaho State Univer- sity and gradu- ated in 1967. Larry is a 1963 graduate of the Univer- sity of Wash- ington. He is the son of Allan and Frances Bacon. Kay is the daughter of Phyllis and LaWayne Chapman. Three Bacon children — Allan, Adam and Willow — grew up in Florence. Allan and wife, Tatsanee, live in Florence; Willow resides in Portland; and Adam and wife, Megan, live in Battle Ground, Wash. Larry and Kay have three granddaughters. The couple volunteers their time with the Friends of Florence organization, which provides free transportation to the Eugene-Springfield area on weekdays for cancer patients to receive radiation treatment. Larry is a driver; Kay, a former driver, now schedules drivers. Larry led or participated in 13 50-mile hikes as a former Boy Scout leader. Kay is active in the Florence Ward of the LDS church and has volunteered with several local organizations. She also started a knitting group which usually meets weekly in the Bacon home. Florence Police Department (FPD) has received concerns from local citizens about unmarked vehicles attempting to pull them over with red and blue mounted flashing lights. The latest report involved a tan van with dash lights attempt- ing to pull someone over. FPD is not aware of any local law enforcement agency that uses an unmarked van. If an unmarked vehicle attempts to pull you over and you do not feel safe, FPD Lt. John Pitcher recommends finding a populated place to pull over or driving to the police station at 900 Greenwood St. (off Ninth Street) in Florence to pull over.
