Florence Police Department
(FPD) received a report on Sunday,
Aug. 30, at 1:11 p.m., of a deceased
subject found in a wooded area north
of Sandpines Golf Links.
According to FPD Lt. John
Pitcher, local residents discovered
the body while hunting mushrooms
in the woods.
The victim is an adult male and,
according to police, appears to have
been in the woods for at least several
days. Pitcher said the time period
makes the man harder to identify.
“The death appears to be from a
suicide,” he said, “but Florence
Police are investigating the circum-
stances surrounding the death.”
FPD is working with the Lane
County Medical Examiner’s office
on the case.
The man was wearing a gray
hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and
black and gray Nike athletic shoes.
Police said the body description and
clothing does not appear to match
any local missing person reports.
Police are seeking information on
this case. Anyone with information
regarding this incident should con-
tact FPD Detective Brandon Ott at
541-997-3515.

K
ylee Williams, who
lives on 18th Street in
Florence, liked the
meditation garden and
labyrinth at St. Andrew’s Episcopal
Church so much that she brought
her mother, Marie, and her older
sister, Aubree, to see it.
She and her younger sister, McKenzie, had
been visiting the quiet spot for a long time.
“It’s just a special, kind of amazing place,”
said Kylee. “I just wanted my mom to know
how much my sister and I like it.”
On a Sunday morning after the 10 o’clock
service, Georgia DuBose, the vicar at St.
Andrew’s, went out to talk with the youth, met
their mom and found out that other children
from the neighborhood liked to visit as well.
The vicar proposed that they help maintain
the garden by taking a field trip with her and her
husband, Bob DuBose, to Bob Creek Wayside,
north of Florence, where smooth rocks can be
found in abundance.

A T A GLANCE : The philosophy
behind Mindpower Gallery is to
keep creative minds working. The
gallery and frame shop has been
in business for over 25 years. In
an effort to keep things exciting
in a depressed economy, the own-
ers started getting creative with
ideas to generate new traffic to a
downtown that has suffered since
the timber industry left Reedsport.
The result: a trendy up-cycled art gallery with a
new, soon-to-be wine-tasting room that retails
Umpqua wines.
The up-cycling that’s been integrated into the
gallery walls and floors sparks a lot of interest and

With the rocks, the youth would help to
define the paths in the meditation garden, and
add to the circuits in the labyrinth.
The three sisters and their friends Byron and
Caden Beckham rode with the DuBoses on
Monday, Aug. 31, to the beach, where they gath-
ered 16 bags of loaf-sized and fist-sized rocks.
Following some time playing on the beach
and a picnic at the picnic table, the group
returned to St. Andrew’s, 2135 19th St. in
Florence, and distributed all the larger rocks
along the meditation garden paths and made a
pile in the labyrinth.
