Enlund retires from WLAD board after eight years
Karl Enlund retired from his
position as a board member on
the Western Lane Ambulance
District (WLAD) last month.
To commemorate his eight
years of service to the commu-
nity, he was presented a plaque
by WLAD executive director
Brian Burright.
“I was talking to WLAD
board member Anne Stonelake
Florence City Wide
Garage Sale
September 11-13, 2015
presented by
the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce
in 2008, and she urged me to
run for the position — so I
did.”
Enlund worked as a State
Police Officer in Oregon from
1970 until his retirement in
1989. As a former emergency
services worker, Enlund felt
his input as a board member
would be valuable. He stated
that his experiences dealing
with regulations, people in
emergent situations, etc.,
would be helpful at WLAD.
“It’s not just about jumping
into an ambulance and picking
up people,” Enlund said. “It’s
all about knowing the busi-
ness, the regulations, equip-
ment, etc.”
Enlund recalled the high
points of being on the board of
directors when he discussed
his trip to Chehalis, Wash.,
where
Braun
Northwest
Ambulances are manufactured.
“I got to watch how they
make ambulances and how
much they cost,” said Enlund,
who also described working
with WLAD members and
helping staff purchase equip-
ment as high points.
According to Enlund,
WLAD’s future challenge
will be the upcoming
“Operation Levy” election in
two years.

Karl Enlund with a plaque for his eight years of service.
“If the levy doesn’t pass,
you might be able to do some
of it for a while, but then you
might have to cut staffing,”
warned Enlund, who also
stressed the importance of
funding a new building. “We
need something a little better
than this building, because it’s
getting old.”
Enlund reflected on his
years as a WLAD board mem-
ber and felt that his time and
dedication was much appreci-
ated by the community.
He said that he had tremen-
dous respect for Western Lane
Ambulance District and will
miss his time there.
“It was an honor to serve
Western Lane Ambulance
District,” Enlund said. “All the
paramedics down here are
really passionate about their
jobs and helping the people
here, and the public doesn’t
realize how some of the inci-
dents affect them — and how
professional they are about
doing their jobs.”
